Over the last six years, Charterhouse’s annual arts festival, Artifex, has expanded to encompass more than seventy events over a five day period. At its heart, it is a festival for the pupils, run by the pupils. Pupils have organised exhibitions, concerts, talent shows, film showings, talks and food demonstrations. The emphasis of Artifex is on pupil responsibility – they are in charge, take risks and learn from mistakes when events do not quite go to plan. This year is no different and the festival is packed with pupil-led events, such as a new Virtual Reality zone, Fashion Show, Drone Racing and a Graffiti competition. Pupils will transform the Chapel into a cinema for the duration of the festival and use the woods for storytelling from Greek Mythology. Sustainability is also a big theme this year, with an artistic sculpture using reclaimed plastics, as well as a large-scale clothes swap event. Charterhouse also uses Artifex as an opportunity to welcome local primary schools to some of the events.
Prom in the Park
The culmination of Artifex is the Prom in the Park concert in which Charterhouse extends a warm welcome to parents and friends to join us for orchestral music performed by professional players alongside current and former pupils. Pupils and parents are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy film classics on a summers’ evening. A concert will include film music from Jurassic Park to James Bond, as well as some popular Last Night of the Proms classics will bring a close to a five-day celebration of Artifex.
