Charterhouse Pupil On Top of the World

Dmitry Tertychnyy reaches the summit of Everest to complete the Seven Summits Challenge

We are delighted to share the news that seventeen-year-old Dmitry Tertychnyy has entered the record books as the youngest Russian to complete the remarkable feat of climbing the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. His successful ascent of Mount Everest on 17 May 2018 means that he has now completed the Seven Summits Challenge, which involved scaling Aconcagua in South America (6962m), Denali in North America (6194m), Kilimanjaro in Africa (5895m), Elbrus in Europe (5692m), Vinson Massif in Antarctica (4897m), Pyramid Carstens in Australia (4884m) and Mount Everest (8848m) in Asia.

When Everest was first climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing in 1953, a series of coded messages transmitted by runner, radio and telegram meant that The Times could break the news to the world on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation.

Times have changed; we received a WhatsApp message from Dmitry at Everest Advanced Base Camp today, but Queen Elizabeth is still Queen!

In adding Everest to his list of conquests, Dmitry follows in the footsteps of George Mallory, a former Charterhouse teacher who was part of the first three Everest expeditions in the 1920s. Dr Alex Peterken, Headmaster of Charterhouse, commented: ‘We are incredibly proud of Dmitry and congratulate him on this phenomenal achievement. We look forward to welcoming him back to Charterhouse.’

Dmitry's video and pictures taken at the summit of Mount Everest can be viewed below:

Dmitry started mountain climbing in 2013 when, at the age of 12, his first attempt at climbing Kilimanjaro ended fifteen minutes’ walk from the peak, due to altitude sickness. After that expedition, he set his sights on the seven summits challenge, which he has completed just five years later. In the process, Dmitry has also been climbing in aid of charity. He has chosen to support Global Action Nepal (GAN), for which Charterhouse raised over £6,500 in 2016.

GAN is an non-governmental organization which is working to improve access to, and the quality of education for poor and marginalized people in Nepal. To learn more about Dmitry’s chosen charity please go to: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mteverest2018
