Face Masks for NHS

Charterhouse DT produces vital face masks for NHS staff

Over a very productive weekend, our Head of Design Technology, Mr Aberneithie and his family adapted 24 workshop goggles into full-face protection shields for nurses and doctors at the Royal Surrey Hospital.

After ringing the hospital in advance to check exactly what they needed, Mr Aberneithie devised that the easiest and most effective method would be to hotglue some extension pieces of balsa wood onto the sides of the goggles and cut large visors from PET plastic (which the department usually use for vacuum forming as it's very clear). The visor was then hotglued and secured with a drawing pin to the balsa and the design was then finished off with holes punched on each side and elastic tied around the back. The result was surprisingly light and comfortable.

Mr Aberneithie was able to deliver 24 full-face protection shields to Royal Surrey Hospital on Tuesday morning and the nurses who he met on delivery were impressed and extremely grateful. They said that masks like these really make a real difference as they provide the vital protection that they are still desperately short of.
