As part of Artifex, our Charity Society hosted an unforgettable evening with the Surrey Search and Rescue team – an inspiring group of volunteers who dedicate their time to saving lives across the county. The event offered pupils a rare glimpse into the world of real-life rescue missions, complete with a hands-on training simulation and powerful insights into the work of this vital emergency response charity.
The evening began with a detailed briefing on a simulated search scenario involving two “missing persons” somewhere on the School grounds. Surrey Search and Rescue volunteers were split into search teams and assigned specific areas to cover. Pupils learned how to conduct a coordinated search, communicate effectively, and respond to potential injuries in the field.
I had the opportunity to take part in a training exercise with Surrey Search and Rescue. My role was to act as a missing person with a fake injury… It was a challenging but rewarding experience, and it gave me a real appreciation for the dedication and professionalism of the search and rescue teams who volunteer their time to help others in crisis.
Gabriela, First Year Specialist (Year 12)
Pupils successfully “rescued” both casualties, one of whom had to be stretchered out from the quarry. This cosy conclusion gave everyone a chance to reflect on the evening, ask questions, and learn more about how the team balances their volunteer work with everyday life.
I really enjoyed seeing how they work and learning about why they do what they do.
Mia, First Year Specialist
We are incredibly grateful to the Surrey Search and Rescue team for their time, energy, and passion. Their visit reminded us of the power of community, the importance of preparation, and the quiet heroism of those who dedicate themselves to helping others in times of crisis.
Thanks to everyone in the Charity Society who helped make this possible. Massive thanks to our First Year Specialist casualties, Gabriela and Jessamy, plus their faithful and concerned support, Mia and Alix, who put on an excellent show when found, acting out their injuries and concerns.
Also, a massive thanks to Fabio Curreli in the QSC for his time helping us set up and making this possible, and to Mrs Hopkinson for her endless energy, support, and drive to ensure all the boxes were ticked and things ran smoothly.
