Navy gets Sinking Feeling

The new recruits to the Charterhouse Royal Navy section visited the Navy’s fire and damage repair training centre in Portsmouth. In the morning they learned about and operated the Royal Navy’s fire fighting equipment.

After lunch they visited the sinking ship simulator. This is a large metal container fitted out like a warship which fills with water and rolls on hydraulic rams. The cadets had to repair holes in the side with wooden bungs to reduce the water levels in the compartment. Their Officer in Charge Tim Reynolds commented: “This exercise develops core skills such as communication, teamwork and leadership, all important parts of the cadet experience and a Charterhouse education.”

Other activities conducted during the training week included yachting to the Isle of Wight, first aid training, shooting and further training at the Royal Navy’s Leadership Academy in Fareham, Hampshire.
