Senior Counsellor, Jan Symes, discusses positive mental health for teenagers
On Sunday 7 October, sixty parents gathered in the Saunders Room for the latest Pastoral Forum. We were considering positive mental health for teenagers, a critical topic for families and educators, under the expert guidance of Jan Symes, Senior Counsellor at Charterhouse.
As part of their Citizenship Education programme, pupils study a range of subjects designed to help them become the adults they want to be, and which the world needs them to be – from sexual consent to social media, from extremism to the environment. Ever-keen to work together with parents in these critical areas, our termly Pastoral Forums are designed to consider similar, important topics and to share parent-teacher perspectives – over a pleasant Sunday evening glass of wine!
Jan Symes was a sexual health nurse and college counsellor, as well as head of the British Airways staff counselling service, before joining Charterhouse in 2016. She led us through fascinating research about the teenage brain, and suggested key areas where families and educators can work together to support both positive mental health, and wider acceptance of mental health concerns, for young people.
