Reinvention: Peter Monkman exhibits abstract work

Director of Art reinvents style in the name of subconcious dreamworlds

The award winning Peter Monkman, our Director of Art, normally known for his exquisite portraiture, has challenged himself by moving in a more abstract direction, delving into dreamworlds of the subconscious.

Latest in a long line of great artists associated with Charterhouse, Monkman studied at the University of Lancaster, John Moores Liverpool and the London Institute, and won the BP Portrait Award in 2009 for his work ‘Changeling 2’, a portrait of his daughter.

Automatic doodles, fantastic beasts, rochache ink blots, and transitional imagery occupied the exhibition to enable the observer to question what painting and drawing can be in a space that does not replicate the visible world.

All work has been produced over the summer holidays as part of research on the Contemporary Painting Summer School at the Slade UCL, London. The exhibtion will be on display in Studio until Monday 17 September.
