OC Completes Ironman

James Delaney (W03) completed the Calella Ironman, consisting of swimming 2.4 miles in the sea, cycling 112 miles and running a full marathon of 26.2 miles.

What on earth makes anybody want to be an Ironman? When James Delaney (W03) attended Leeds University to take his degree in History of Art, he met a couple of likeminded students who all agreed to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats. Afterwards while taking a two year Law degree he joined a group cycling to Paris; this was the clue to his future intentions. He decided to take on one of the ultimate physical challenges and to complete this challenge before reaching the age of 40 in 2024.

The Calella Ironman near Barcelona fit James’ timetable as it was due to take place in early October. To increase his chances of finishing, James needed to start his training at least nine months before his Ironman. He embarked on a gruelling training programme that resulted in late nights after work and long weekends.

The Ironman consists of swimming 2.4 miles in the sea, cycling 112 miles and running a full marathon of 26.2 miles; James completed his Ironman in 11 hours and 16 minutes – a case of true grit! He was enthusiastically cheered on by his wife, who has run 15 marathons herself, his two young children of 8 and 5, his in-laws, father and other family.

Congratulations James!
