Old Carthusians Believe

Old Carthusians Believe

An ambitious cricket tour, a story of underdogs, and a strong Charterhouse connection – seven Old Carthusians are part of a remarkable journey that's heading to The Gambia.

Ben Geffen (B12), captain of The Believers Cricket Club – a small, spirited team of friends who didn’t make the cut for their local clubs – had a wild idea two years ago: what if they played against national sides?

After sending hopeful messages to cricket boards across Europe and Africa, Ben was surprised to receive several replies. The Believers have since toured Romania and Slovenia. In November 2025, they will travel to West Africa to play an international fixture against The Gambia national team, with the British High Commissioner expected to attend.

When asked whether this might spark more international fixtures, Ben joked:

Oh, definitely – the plan is world domination.

The match is just part of a larger story. A director has begun filming a documentary about the team, exploring their journey, their improbable fixtures, the friendships behind the scenes, and the cultural connections forged through cricket. Every penny raised is going directly to fund the film’s production, and the team is also working to provide meaningful support to cricket in The Gambia, including kit donations.

The club has strong Charterhouse roots, with seven Old Carthusians involved: Ben Geffen (B12), Jack Geffen (B10), Ollie Geffen (D17), George Stern (B12), Olly Stern (P12), Charles Pexton (D17), and Edward Wilcox (B12). Five of them will be heading to The Gambia as part of the 16-person touring squad.

The story has already captured attention, with features in The Cricketer, an announcement by Jonathan Agnew, a radio interview, and support from sponsors.
