Charterhouse exists as a result of Thomas Sutton’s bequest in 1611 and many other legacies and bequests since then have contributed to the School we know today. These have been given by individuals and families who share Sutton’s conviction in the power of education to shape young peoples’ lives for the better.
To acknowledge Free Wills Month, Charterhouse have partnered with Guardian Angel, a Will writing service whereby Old Carthusians can create their Will for free, when choosing to leave a legacy towards Charterhouse.
Our 2023 Legacy Campaign launched last week, and many of our OC community will have received a letter, which offers further information and guidance on how to leave a legacy to Charterhouse in your Will. But for those that don’t already have a Will, and wish to consider creating one, we wanted to ensure that an easy to use and friendly service was available to our community, which is why we’ve partnered with Guardian Angel.
An up-to-date Will ensures your wishes are respected, and ensures that difficult decisions and legal complications can be avoided for your loved ones. Writing a Will also allows you to leave a gift to selected Charities. We hope that many more OCs will choose to follow in Thomas Sutton’s footsteps and consider leaving a legacy that enables future generations to experience an education that truly lasts a lifetime.
As many Old Carthusians will attest to, a Charterhouse education is a transformative experience, and one that ensures you are part of a lifelong community. Many OCs choose to give back to the School by leaving a legacy in their Will, and becoming a member of our Thomas Sutton Society, whereby we can acknowledge and thank you for your generosity in your lifetime.
After finding myself the fortunate beneficiary of donations to support my bursary, I can honestly say without hesitation that it has been life changing. I think after enjoying my time at Charterhouse and subsequently the OC football club, I’ve come to realise that giving back to the School is what makes Charterhouse so special.

A gift in your Will costs you nothing now, but can make a truly significant difference to generations of future Carthusians in years to come.
