The fastest growing sport at Charterhouse continues to thrive this term.
Following two record breaking fixtures against Harrow and Berkhamsted, alongside superb wins against Westminster and Cranleigh, pupils travelled to Eton on 7 November for the largest fixture in the 140 year history of Fives at Charterhouse.
Twenty-four Carthusians made the journey, representing a cross section of the sport at Charterhouse, from U14 novices through to our U16 national finalists and a number of keen Year 13 pupils enjoying their final year of the sport as pupils. Playing a well matched selection of Eton pairs, our U16s won all of their games with the standout being a gruelling three set affair involving our 1st pair of Jan (Year 11) and Khalel (Year 13). This saw Charterhouse go behind in the first set only to fight their way back as they steadily identified the opposition’s weaknesses and improved their shot selection accordingly.
This steady improvement through the afternoon was also seen among our U14s, where 1st pair Daniel (Year 9) & Denis (Year 9) won a thriller in three sets, while 2nd and 3rd pairs narrowly lost over two hours of absorbing match play. Our U15s found the going harder, losing each of their games and some by larger margins. All made significant progress, with Jake (Year 10) & Sacha (Year 10) the most impressive. Huge thanks go to Eton for providing further pairs for even more games after the official matches were over, enabling our boys to keep playing right up until the coach arrived!
A great fixture and fantastic experience for all our players. We look forward to hosting Mill Hill, Sunningdale and Shrewsbury over the coming weeks.
