Round-Up of Sport

Round-Up of Sport

This Quarter (term) has seen some excellent sport across the School. Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Cricket 1st XIs enjoyed strong seasons, with the girls set to play in the County Cup Final and the boys’ team narrowly missing out on silverware. On the tennis courts, competitive fixtures, house tournaments, and individual competitions kept pupils busy, with several unbeaten teams and an impressive overall win rate reflecting a fantastic term of sport.

Cricket

Boys' First XI:

As the season draws to a close, we can reflect on some very good performances – especially from the 1st XI, who have had an excellent year and narrowly missed out on winning the Cowdrey Cup.

In the vital game against Harrow, we dominated for large periods. Ollie (Fifth Form, Year 11) took 5–37 and scored 35, but a massive collapse in the chase for 191 handed the title to Wellington.

Rohan (First Year Specialist, Year 12) produced a standout performance at Hurstpierpoint, taking 5–23 in a very comprehensive victory.

Boys' Cricket:

In other games, Will (Removes, Year 10) scored 97 against Hurst in the U15s. That match – in which we scored 203 and Hurst replied with 204–9 – was one of the season’s best, despite the narrowest of defeats.

Girls' First XI:

With the season nearing its end, the final few matches for the girls’ programme have featured some brilliant cricket.

The 1st XI have had an excellent cup run, reaching the County Cup Final against Emanuel School on 26 June. On their way there, they defeated George Abbot by 53 runs in the quarter-final and overcame Caterham School by 8 runs in a thrilling semi-final.

Girls' Cricket:

The U15 team also enjoyed a strong cup run, making it through to the final against Kingston Grammar School, where they were sadly beaten by 8 wickets in a match shaped by a few defining moments. Their journey to the final was something to be proud of, edging past St George’s Weybridge with a narrow 8-run victory in the quarter-final, then beating Putney High School by 6 wickets in the semi-final. Megan (Removes, Year 10) guided the team home, scoring 74 not out, alongside Ella (Fourth Form, Year 9).

Tennis

The season has come to an end – and what a season it has been. We have had so many pupils playing tennis, both in matches for the School and in practice sessions. House tournaments have taken place, along with singles tournaments for both the Seniors and Under School, as well as mixed doubles competitions.

It has been a fantastic Quarter (term), and thanks must go to Mr Silvester for running such a comprehensive programme. The sheer number of training sessions and matches he has organised is a huge undertaking.

The Girls’ Second VI and U14A teams remained unbeaten all season, achieving an impressive 65% win rate, while the First Team lost only once.

The boys’ teams also enjoyed sustained success, with clear strength in depth throughout. Particular mention must go to the Boys’ U15s, where competition for places in the U15D side remained fierce.

We had two fantastic blocks against Wellington, where we played mixed doubles, and then against Bradfield on the penultimate weekend – a fixture that proved competitive across the board.

The last week of Quarter (term) saw Under School house tennis, including singles and mixed tournaments.

Aryaman Nagpal Mixed Doubles Tournament:

More importantly from a tennis perspective, the Aryaman Nagpal Trophy took place on Friday 20 June. Six pairs competed for the title in this special event, which serves as the tennis community’s way of remembering Aryaman – a Gownboy who joined in 2018 and played for the School’s 1st team. He sadly died in a car accident in May 2020.

The six pairs competed in great spirit, and going into the final round of matches, four pairs were still in contention for the title – a testament to the quality and competitiveness of the play.

The winners of the 2025 edition of the Aryaman Nagpal Trophy were Ksenia & Freddie (First Year Specialists, Year 12), with Selina (First Year Specialist) & Jules (Fifth Form, Year 11) finishing as runners-up.
