The School has been action-packed with sport, and Carthusian Day was a particular highlight.
Featuring a thrilling cricket match where the 1st XI triumphed over the Old Carthusians (OCs), Carthusian Day also saw the historic first girls' cricket fixture against OCs on Manaics. Tennis was in full swing with the Family Tennis Doubles, showcasing great sportsmanship and skill, and celebrating several family wins and the awarding of sports colours.
Cricket
Carthusian Day saw the return of our leavers to play against the 1st XI on Green. The School put on an excellent display to score 250 before dismissing the OCs for 180, Archie (Year 12) with 4 wickets including his brother, Seb, who left last year. On Manaics we had the first ever girls' fixture against the OCs, a good sign of where the School is with girls' cricket. Highlights from the match were Megan (Year 9) taking three wickets for only five runs in her two overs contributing to a victory against the OCs.
An excellent display by the 1st XI earned them a great victory. To round off the day we had the Boys Junior House Competition group stages as cricket was played all over School!
The first week back sees fixtures against Bede’s and Wellington for boys and girls. Next week sees the Quarter Final of the Surrey Cup for the U15 Girls as we entertain Priors Field. Lots of cricket yet to be played in the 2024 season.
Tennis
Carthusian Day was busy on the tennis courts for both the Family Tennis Doubles and also the Carthusian Under School Mixed tennis tournament.
Family Doubles
Well done to all the families that played tennis this afternoon. Crucially - we all made it in time for tea! Having the 5 events running in parallel hopefully meant plenty of tennis for everyone, so hope you are all enjoying a well-earned rest this evening! Lovely to see lots of different partners - we had a pairing today consisting of the 1964 and 2024 Charterhouse Captains of Tennis!
I am pleased to announce the following results:
The Main Draw Winners were the Wheatcroft Family, with the Drayson Family as the Runners Up
The Sally Russell Trophy Winners were the Hallin Family, with the Patil-Lambin Family as the Runners Up
The Plate Draw Winners were the Serrano-Visser Family, with the Larin Family as the Runners Up
The Bowl Draw Winners were the Bown Family, with the Magliana Family as the Runners Up
The Shield Draw Winners were the Bevan Family, with the Hogg Family as the Runners Up
I was also delighted to announce the awarding of sports colours for tennis to Amelia (Year 13), Max (Year 11) and Humphrey (Year 11). All three have been instrumental to the success of our senior teams.
Thank you also to Miss Batty, Mr Tink, Miss Edge and Mr Hingston for their help in ensuring the smooth running of the afternoon.
Thank you to all the spectators as well - it was amazing to see so many people around the Astro and the QSC Hard Courts. Your support was hugely appreciated and added to the positive atmosphere. Indeed, it was lovely to see a number of new faces as well as families who have played on Carthusian Day for a number of years.
Carthusian Under School Mixed Tennis Tournament
Again like last year, this was a great success with 32 players entered in the main draw. Round robin boxes determined who would go into the Cup or the trophy tournament. Some excellent tennis on display and it was fantastic to see some mixed tennis.
The final of the Cup was Nicole (Year 10) and Jules (Year 10) against Alexa (Year 9) and Gaetano (Year 9). In an exciting game, Alexa and Gaetano sealed the victory.
In the trophy Alice (Year 9) and Zhi Tao (Year 9) played Sofia (Year 9) and John (Year 10) in the final and again, a very close final with Sofia and John getting the win.
Thank you to all the parents for their support on this lovely event. A great atmosphere and fantastic display of sportsmanship.
