Cricket

As the cricket season draws to an end we can reflect on a fantastic term of cricket. We have fielded 14 teams, played 126 fixtures and introduced girls cricket into the sports programme.

The 1st XI have had an excellent year with 10 wins. Notable performers have been Luke, Jonty , Seb  and Jevan. All four have dominated the statistics.

The Girls' 1st XI have had many good matches and in Maya and Steph we have two excellent leaders. The U15A’s have had an excellent season with notable wins over Winchester, Cranleigh and Lord Wandsworth and a tie with Wellington.

The U14A’s after a tough start have shown resilience and character s\which has seen them undefeated over the final 6 games, including an epic tie against Bradfield. The boys house competitions were dominated by Daviesites who won both Senior and Junior House trophies.

It has been great to see the B and C teams play a full part in out programme and we have many notable team highlight in these teams throughout CQ. Special mention to the U15C team with 6 victories from their 11 games.

1st XI Girls vs Godalming Cricket Club Women

A warm Monday evening on Maniacs provided the perfect backdrop as the 1st XI Girls took on Godalming Cricket Club Women in a T20 as part of the 150th Anniversary celebration of Charterhouse’s move to the town. After winning the toss, Charterhouse elected to put Godalming into bat. After a solid for the visitors start captain Steph made the breakthrough before Maya then got the second to successfully put the brakes on Godalming’s early progress. Wickets throughout the middle overs came from Summer, Lily, Ophelia and Liv which helped to control Godalming’s run rate, before Steph then returned the attack and picked up another two wickets to leave Godalming on 107 for 8 off their 20 overs.

In reply, opening batters Maya and Poppy got the Charterhouse innings off to a flying start, taking 23 off the first two overs to put us in a strong position. However, three wickets very quick wickets then helped get Godalming back into the game, and suddenly we were struggling at 27 for 3. Steph then joined her vice-captain Maya out in the middle, and the pair went about rebuilding the innings, adding 34 together before Maya was caught for a well-made 18. Steph then followed a few overs later having added 27 off 32 balls which included four boundaries. The game went down to the final over, and with Charterhouse needing 8 to win, Godalming’s experience showed as some tight bowling and good fielding helped them hold on for a narrow 3 run victory.

Our thanks go to Godalming Cricket Club for a fantastic evening's cricket, and we look forward to hopefully hosting them next year and for this to become a regular fixture for our 1st XI Girls team.

1st XI Boys v Godalming Cricket Club Men

It was great to welcome Godalming Cricket Club to Green to play the 1st XI on Monday evening. Winning the toss and batting first, the School posted 161 with captain Jonty scoring 63 and Harry making a fluent 55. With the ball, debutant Olu impressed taking 3 wickets in the middle period of the game as well as Dom bowling tidily throughout. A convincing 35 run victory for the School but more importantly playing against local side, Godalming was the big success - a lovely BBQ followed for all players and for the boys and girls to play on the same night meant it was a lovely atmosphere in general.

Laura Hill Cup for Removes House Cricket

On Tuesday 21 June, the Remove girls had House Cricket. Chetwynd and Northbrook played a six-a-side game with everyone getting involved, despite only a few girls having played before. Chetwynd batted first with Amelia and Clara batting incredibly strong, scoring six 4s between them. Poppy also scored two great 4s but with an unlucky wicket in the second to last ball. Northbrook fielded very well in the first innings, with Georgia taking a wicket and only four no balls in 12 overs. Chetwynd fielded strongly; Arina, Amelia, Clara and Louise all taking catches. Ophelia also took two wickets in three overs. Northbrook batted superbly well with Issy and Sophia both scoring 15 runs each. Georgia and Ruby both scoring 4s. It was a great game of cricket with both teams playing extremely well. Well done to Chetwynd who won by 37 runs.

Louise Burrows Cup for Yearling House Cricket

On the morning of Tuesday 21 June, the first ever Yearling Girls' House Cricket tournament commenced. Chetwynd faced Fletcherites and Sutton faced Northbrook. The matches were played in a pairs format, 3 overs per pair and 12 overs per innings.

In the Fletcherites vs Chetwynd match, Chetwynd won the toss and elected to bowl. During the first innings, Beatrix scored 9 runs off 10 balls for Fletcherites. Chetwynd evened the score with Lily getting 5 wickets conceding 10 runs of 3 overs, Fletcherites completed their 12 overs finishing with a total of 225 runs. During Chetwynd’s innings, they did well getting 30 runs with Elodie, 9 runs off 8 balls. It was tense right up to the end as wickets were lost evening out the score. Summer got 2 wickets for 3 runs over 2 overs, which helped Fletcherites keep the score down. Chetwynd were able to hang on till the end though winning by 5 runs.

In the other semi-final, 22 from Jamie, supported by Emily (10) and Jemima (9) helped Sutton reach 285 off their 12 overs against Northbrook. Alix was the pick of the bowlers for Northbrook, picking up 2 wickets. In reply, 3 wickets from Bea and two each for Jemima and Ayah helped Sutton to effectively control the Northbrook chase. Annie topped scored as Northbrook finished on 219, meaning Sutton advanced to the final.

It was a great display of cricket from all four Houses.

On Thursday 23 June, Sutton and Chetwynd met in the final for the Yearling Girls' House Cricket. Two days earlier, Sutton had beaten Northbrook 65 runs and Chetwynd had beaten Fletcherites by 5 runs in a very close match. In this game, Chetwynd won the toss and elected to bowl. Opening the batting for Sutton was Jamie-Ella and Ayah. Opening the bowling for Chetwynd was Lily. It was an excellent performance from Jamie-Ella, who scored 32 runs off 31 balls. Sutton scored 79 runs and lost 3 wickets in the first innings. During this innings, Lily (1), Amalia (1) and Poppy (1) all took wickets.

Poppy and Elodie opened the batting in the second innings, keen to make runs. Elodie and Lily produced great batting performances. Elodie scored 34 runs off 22 balls and Lily scored 19 runs off 15 balls. Jemima opened the bowling for Sutton and Ayah took the only wicket for Sutton. Chetwynd scored 80 runs for 1 wicket, ultimately winning the game. It was a fantastic show of girls' cricket and a very close final, many congratulations to Chetwynd for winning.

Meanwhile, Northbrook defeated Fletcherites in a close contest to win the pairs format third place play-off. With Fletcherites requiring 257 to win, some excellent Northbrook bowling and fielding restricted the progress of the chase, as regular wickets ensured Northbrook claimed third place with a 7-run victory.

Tennis

Senior Boys' House Overview

The competition didn’t stop against other schools – rivalries were the name of the game when House tennis started. The Senior Boys competition, with the ever earlier start time of public examinations, was played on a single afternoon. Plenty of tension throughout, though it was the strength in depth of Saunderites which saw them retain their title.

The Junior Boys event was played on the penultimate Saturday of Quarter, and what an event it was. The round robin group involving Verites, Weekites, Hodgsonites and Saunderites was not decided until the final game of the final set was played. Indeed, given the close nature of the matches, Verites lost to Hodgsonites, but Verites ended up group winners with Hodgsonites in 4th place!

Verites, Bodeites, Pageites and Daviesites progressed to the main draw

Weekites, Saunderites, Gownboys and Lockites 1 to the bowl draw

Lockites 2, Duckites, Hodgsonites and Robinites to the plate draw

Then the knockout tennis started! Bodeites and Pageites came through tough semi final matches to book their places in the main final. The final came down to a first to 4 game shootout between the second pairs. Pageites – having qualified as the best second place – did just enough to get over the finishing line. Well done to them! Also well done to Lockites 1 and Hodgsonites for winner the Bowl and Plate Draws.

Aryaman Nagpal Trophy 2022

The last weekend of Quarter saw 6 pairs playing in the Aryaman Nagpal Trophy; an invitational mixed doubles tournament for the Sixth Form. Aryaman was a Gownboy who enjoyed playing for the 1st VI and we are honoured to put on the event in his memory.

There was an excellent level of play and a good balance between competition and fun. It was a close fought event with every pair winning at least one match. Felix (B) and Ava-Louisa (F) won four out of their five matches but were just pipped to the post by the eventual winners Tom (D) and Maddie (C). Well done to all players involved.

Carthusian Society Cup for Removes Girls' House Tennis

As this year we only have two Houses for Removes it was a head to head with Northbrook and Chetwynd. All year, they have been fighting it out for the trophies in all sports and this was the final one to add to the cabinet. With strong players in both Houses it certainly was going to be nail biting but who could hold their nerves for today? Decisions to be made- do you split your strong players up or keep them as a pair so you could win three matches? Strategy, tactics were all part of the planning. Matches were close and the girls played very well. Special mention goes to Amelia and Clara who won all of their matches for Chetwynd and to Charlotte and Louise who won two out of their three, just losing out to Northbrook’s Izzy and Sofia. Arina and Liv also won their three matches so Chetwynd were the deserved winners for this event.

Final results

1st Chetwynd

2nd Northbrook

Susanna Hunt Cup for Yearlings Girls' House Tennis

This House event was obviously our first ever Inter-House tennis and all the cups have been named after our OC’s who played a significant role in their sport when they were here at the School. The Yearlings event was fantastic, with a real buzz down on the QSC hard courts, where the boys were also playing their House event on the Astro courts. This year group have many strong tennis players and all from different Houses which is great to see and certainly from a tournament perspective. It came down to Fletcherites and Northbrook in the crucial last round that would determine who were the winners this year. Fletcherites 3rd pair Bella and Summer won their match against Northbrook but the others didn’t, as Anna and Ksenia and Amber and Jesssamy were just too consistent and found the space on the court. Northbrook took the win but it was a great tournament. Special mention to Chetwynd’s 3rd pair Florence and Charlotte who won all their matches. Fantastic to see so much House spirit on the courts and how much they enjoyed playing.

Final results

1st Northbrook

2nd Fletcherites

3rd Chetwynd

4th Sutton

Martin Sterio Cup for Under School Girls' House Tennis

Played on the last Saturday of the academic year and the finale to an amazing term, saw all four Houses battled it out for the last cup of the year. Would it be Chetwynd, Fletcherites, Northbrook or Sutton who took it?

The sun was shining, the trophy was glistening, the cakes sat waiting to be demolished and the girls were in great spirits, so we knew it would be a great way to finish, what has been a successful year.

The matches were tight and went down to the last points, where we could hear screams of excitement as the important wins happened. The winning teams were always so fast to run in and tell me the scores which meant the atmosphere was electric.

The end result was very close between Sutton and Northbrook and it could have gone either way but this year, to round it off- Northbrook were the winners!!! Mrs Pugh was super proud when the girls went up to collect the trophy.

A great way to finish off Inter-House tennis and more importantly a successful season for everyone involved.

Final results

1st Northbrook

2nd Sutton

3rd Fletcherites

4th Chetwynd
