Teams and individuals continue to achieve impressive results and look ahead to new challenges and competitions on the horizon.
Badminton
The squad continues to grow in ability and in number, with a new Year 9 joining us and the potential for a couple of others by this time next year. In other words, things bode well for the coming couple of years at least. We continue to have a fixture every week, recently beating Reed’s and then drawing with Wellington at home, the latter primarily due to the absence of 2 of our top 5 players. With Harrow this week, we will be challenged, but there is a chance of it this year. Spirits are high and we’re pushing for more. We’re hoping to welcome a Surrey University team on campus to play our top players in the near future, and plans for the Charterhouse Cup early in Spring Term are well under way.
Basketball
In Basketball Charterhouse U18s beat Royal Hospital School 97-37 in week 7. The Charterhouse U18 is notable for being made up of both boys and girls from 4 different year groups, Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13, with many pupils facing players several years older than they are.
Hockey
The last two weeks have seen some outstanding hockey being played across all age groups with some fantastic results across the board. The Charterhouse hockey program is starting to show its quality on the Surrey circuit with two great blocks against Churcher's College and Christ Hospital. The Churcher's block was a great competitive weekend with a great standard of hockey which led to the Christ Hospital block that saw all teams on the day end victorious which was great for all the girls to see their hard work pay off.
The 1st XI has enjoyed a few great weeks out on the pitch with an 8-1 win over St Teresa’s in the national cup to move into round 3, they played an outstanding game against Churcher’s where they finished 5-0 and have recently enjoyed a good victory over Christ Hospital.
The 15A’S had tough cup fixture against Alleyn’s last week where they came back from 2-0 down to level the game up at 2-2 at the final whistle but unfortunately went down 1-0 on penalty flicks. They have now drawn Eltham College in round two of the plate.
It has been great to see that so many players have enjoyed a great seven weeks of hockey so far and we look forward to what the rest of the season holds for the Charterhouse girls' teams.
Netball
Preseason training has been going well on a Monday evening for the specialists and they have been working towards the Surrey Schools Tournament. A tough draw for the U19 team but they were determined to use the day for them to progress as a team and become more cohesive and they did just that. A slow start against an accomplished Guildford High team but the matches against St. George’s Weybridge, Cranleigh and Tormead were close and showed real promise for next term. Gabi was awarded player of the tournament for her excellent interceptions and dominating the circle, so many congratulations to her.
Despite the cold and wet weather, the U14 girls displayed great energy and teamwork both on and off the court in the recent Surrey Schools tournament. It was fantastic to see this new team come together for the first time, and they managed to execute some excellent plays, particularly in the match against Priorsfield, where we secured a win. Across the four matches, players showcased their versatility and gave their best efforts. While it was difficult to choose, Player of the Tournament was awarded to Sophia, who shone in both WD and GD, consistently winning turnovers and transitioning the ball effectively down to the attackers. The U15 team faced tough opposition, but the team's enthusiasm remained high throughout the day. As the day progressed, their performance improved, and the team moved into space more effectively. Kotryna stood out as the player of the tournament with her exceptional defensive skills.
Individual Successes
Huge congratulations to Baye who has been chosen to represent Canada in the 2024 IWWF Pan American Wakeboard Championships. She has been training hard at Thorpe Lakes this Quarter and we wish her all the best for the championships.
