Sport Round-Up

The tennis season has seen numerous competitions, with 134 fixtures, 1176 sets of tennis and 242 Carthusians representing the school. Meanwhile, the School's athletes excelled in various competitions, setting 10 school records and achieving notable wins in track and field events.

Tennis

It has continued to be an incredibly busy tennis season with numerous teams competing over the past fortnight. Alongside House Tennis events and the Senior School Singles Competitions, the boys and girls have had ample opportunities to play with many highlights. Indeed, the difficult part is to know where to start.

Saturday 11 May witnessed 26 different school matches taking place at Charterhouse, Wellington and Cranleigh. Indeed, to get everyone on court took some creative court management strategies with staggered starts but to have 5 senior boys teams, 4 senior girls teams, 5 U15 girls teams, 4 U15 boys teams, 4 U14 boys teams and 4 U14 girls teams on a single afternoon meant we had 168 Carthusians representing the school on a single afternoon. Playing doubles, that would required 84 courts at the same time(!). Highlights included:

  • the Girls 1st and 2nd Teams with fantastic victories against Wellington

  • the Boys 1st Team with a narrow win over Cranleigh

  • the Girls U15 and Boys U14 teams demonstrating the remarkable strength in depth with a clean sweep of victories against Wellington

The main winner that afternoon was seeing so many players involved in competitive tennis.

Saturday 18 May took things to an even further level as we had various fixtures with St John's Leatherhead, Lord Wandsworth and St Mary's Ascot. Even more staggering was the nature of the performances with 18 teams out of 21 being victorious.

The Girls 1st Team, U15A and U14A took part in the ISGTL (Independent Schools Girls Tennis League). Competing in a Group with Marlborough (1-5), Bradfield (3-3) and Epsom (4-2), in their playoff match with St Mary's Ascot with the score at 3 sets a piece, on game countback (16-15) we finished in 5th place which was a fine achievement.

The Senior House Tennis event took place which was as competitive as ever with Weekites narrowly beating Verites in a competitive final. The Boys U14 House Tennis event also ran, with Hodgsonites defeating a spirited Daviesites side in the final.

For those who love their numbers, in total there have been 134 fixtures that have taken place, involving 1176 sets of tennis with 242 Carthusians representing the school. For some standout unbeaten teams for this half of Quarter, the Girls U15B team remain unbeaten with 7 wins from 7, the Girls U15C team with 4 wins from 4 and the Boys U14C team with 6 wins from 6.

With Carthusian Day around the corner with record entries in the Family Doubles and Invitational Junior Mixed Doubles, the future continues to look extremely bright!

Athletics

Cricket Quarter (Spring Term) weeks 4 and 5 were busy for Charterhouse athletics.

They started with the Waverley Trials, after which 17 athletes were selected to represent Waverley at the Surrey Schools Championships in June.

The girls competed against Prior’s Field at U16 and U15 level in a track and field relays competition, winning in both age groups.

Charterhouse boys had their best result at the Lord Burghley Trophy competition at Eton, with the juniors beating St Paul’s and Tonbridge to finish fourth. Best performances of the day were Zach in the junior LJ and TJ, George in winning the inter 100m and Ryan  competing in six events, jumping 1.80m in the high jump, over 6m in the long jump and throwing a discus 34m.

The girls had a successful day at Lord Wandsworth College, with notable wins from Ella in the 800m and Muno in the 100m and 200m.

The following week saw the U15 and U16 teams beat Gordon’s and the girls won an 8-school event at Claremont, but the U15 boys were pipped by Ibstock Place after running out of their lane in the 4 x 100m relay.

A team of over 70 athletes competed at Winchester against the hosts, Canford, Dauntsey’s, St Benedict's, Bloxham, Portsmouth Grammar School and Marlborough on Saturday 18 May. Conditions were warm and still, and 10 school records tumbled to: Max (JB 300m), Zach (JB TJ), Aidan (JB discus), George (IB 100m and 200m), Thomas (SB 200m), Muna (SG 100m and 200m) and the JB and IG 4 x 100m teams. An awesome performance by all our athletes – finishing second in the junior boys and girls, third in the senior boys and fourth in the inter girls.
