Friday 10 May saw Charterhouse host the inaugural Pattison Plate Fives tournament.
Organised in honour of Old Carthusian Ronald Pattison, a great supporter of the game both at Charterhouse and around the country, the tournament saw more than 40 pupils, Old Carthusians (OCs) and teachers taking part in a hotly anticipated evening tournament. Played in glorious sunshine, pupils were paired with adults to create evenly matched pairs, competing against each other in pools of four. Many players found themselves on a Fives court for the very first time, paired with more experienced pupils or teachers, and there were many tightly fought games.
The top two pairs in each pool went through to the Quarter Finals, and the rest were so keen to continue playing that we organised a ‘Plate B’ competition for those less successful, which also went to Quarters, Semis and a Final. The overall tournament was won by Bertie (Year 10), playing alongside Mr Gillespie, a History teacher and OC, in a hugely exciting final played against Leo (Year 9) and Geography teacher Mr Chisholm.
We were fortunate to have Louise Pattison, Ronald’s widow, with us to present the beautiful silver trophy to the winning pair and once engraved this will go on display in the Bodeites trophy cabinet. The Pattison Plate trophy itself was kindly donated by OC Sir Ian Davis.
