At Charterhouse all pupils are encouraged to participate in and enjoy themselves across a wide range of sports, making use of the School’s impressive facilities.

There are both competitive inter-school sports matches as well as inter-house competitions, providing opportunities not only for the most talented performers to develop and flourish but also for the many others who are keen to practise and compete at an appropriate level. For those pupils who have set their sights at professional level sport, we have our Charterhouse Athlete Programme.

Sport offers opportunities to cultivate communication and leadership skills, to work as part of a team, and to develop resilience by learning to meet success and failure head-on. Most importantly, participation in sport is an excellent way to improve health and wellbeing. It helps all our pupils to learn to take responsibility for themselves, setting them up for later life by teaching them the importance of maintaining a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

Charterhouse seeks to combine academic excellence with sport at all levels. In short, we aim to promote participation and develop performance for boys and girls throughout their time at the School.

Core Sport

For each of the three school terms, there is a core sport. For boys they are football (Autumn Term), hockey (Spring Term) and cricket (Summer Term). In the Autumn and Spring Terms, Under School boys (Years 9 - 11) are expected to play the core sport of the term, unless alternatives are agreed with the masters of each respective year group. For girls, the core sports played in the Winter Term are hockey, lacrosse, football and netball, and tennis and athletics in the Summer Term. As Specialists (Years 12 and 13), both boys and girls have access to the school gym in the Queen’s Sport Centre and can attend classes such as spinning and yoga.

Non-Core Sports

Non-core sports operate throughout the three terms, subject to whether or not they are ‘in season’. Depending on year groups, participation alongside the respective core sport is compulsory. New pupils can enjoy a taste of all non-core sports when they begin the Autumn Term, after which, they choose which non-core sport(s) they would like to play.

Non-core sports include: badminton, basketball, climbing, cross country, fencing, fives, golf, racquets, rugby union, shooting, squash, swimming, tennis and waterpolo.
