Simon Hayward - Director of Sport
Simon joined Charterhouse in August 2018 as Director of Football. He is a Business Economics graduate, and followed this with a 16-year career with Exeter City Football Club, most recently for the past 9 years, as Academy Director and Head of Coaching, where he helped develop a nationally recognised and respected youth development programme. Simon has coached players who have gone onto play Premier League and International football. He is a top qualified UEFA Pro Licence holder as well as possessing numerous Football Association qualifications and awards. Simon leads the coaching programme for all boys' and girls' football at Charterhouse as well as being Head Coach for the Boys’ 1st XI.
Kevin Brown, BSc - Deputy Director of Sport
Kevin teaches Fourth Form Geography and is also the Deputy Director of Sport. Previously, he has been Housemaster of Weekites, Master of the Fifths, Master of the Yearlings and Assistant Housemaster in Bodeites. Born and raised in the South Island of New Zealand, Kevin began studying a Sports Science degree at the University of Otago before starting work at Charterhouse in January 1999 - while working at Charterhouse, he completed his degree at Kingston University. An avid follower and coach of all three major sports (football, hockey and cricket), he has also been heavily involved in running outdoor educational trips, most notably, overseas expeditions with World Challenge to Peru, Morocco, Mongolia, Norway, Madagascar and Tanzania. Within the Fourths’ geography curriculum, Kevin specialises in the study of the Olympic Games, it’s legacy and the regeneration of Stratford and East London.
Mrs Nicola Edwards, BA - Director of Girls' Sport
Mrs Edwards joined Charterhouse in 2019 from King’s College School, Wimbledon, where she was Head of Girl’s Games for the previous eight years. She was educated in Sheffield at Sheffield Girls High School GDST before attending I.M.Marsh, Liverpool John Moores University. Mrs Edwards has worked in several Independent Senior schools and started her teaching career at Downe House School in Berkshire. Mrs Edwards likes to travel and follows all sports.
Martin Bicknell - Director of Cricket
Martin started his career with Surrey County Cricket Club at the age of 17. In 21 years with the county, he took 1,061 wickets in first class cricket and scored 3 centuries. Winning 9 domestic honours including 3 County Championships, Martin was voted players’ player of the year 7 years in a row during the club’s golden era between 1996 and 2003. Martin represented England on 11 occasions, 4 test matches and 7 one day internationals. He retired in 2006 to take up the position of Cricket Professional at Charterhouse. Martin is a UKCC Level 4 qualified coach and as Director of Cricket he oversees the running an outstanding cricket programme which competes against all the top schools in the South East of England.
Mr Dominic Ballisat - Interim Director of Hockey
Mr Ballisat joined Charterhouse in 2019 after leaving RAF Officer Training to support his family following a bereavement. Before that he worked in Swiss and British boarding schools developing hockey programmes and contributing significantly to boarding life. As a Hockey Coach he has spent time working with athletes for Hockey Wales and directing various clubs across the UK, Switzerland and the USA. Alongside hockey, Mr Ballisat enjoys volunteering for the British Red Cross, endurance racing and spending time with his 3 beloved dogs.
Phil Collier - Lacrosse Coach
Phil played lacrosse for England at two world championships before moving into coaching the sport. He has since coached both the England and Scotland senior men’s teams, winning the European Championships three times with England. Phil is the current National Team Director for the England Women’s Team helping the squad to prepare for the 2017 World Cup, which will be held in Guildford, England. The campaign has got off to a good start, with Phil leading England to victory at the 2015 European Championships held in Nymburk, Czech Republic in August. This means that Phil is the first and only coach to have won both the men’s and women’s European Championships.
Phil also delivers level three coach education courses for English Lacrosse, and mentoring support to eight other coaches involved in the lacrosse talent development and high performance pathway. Phil’s coaching philosophy is to make sure that the players enjoy their lacrosse, focus on the development of the fundamental technical skills, and to try to provide them with a playing framework in which they can make best use of their individual skills.
Martin Crosby - Head of Racquets
Prior to joining Charterhouse Martin has coached at The Racquet Club of Chicago, The Racquet Club of Philadelphia and Harrow School. He comes from a long line of Racquets playing Crosbys, his great grandfather was the Professional at Portsmouth Naval College in the 1890s. Martin has held the British Pro-Am Doubles title and also sits on the Racquets Committee of the Tennis and Racquets Association. Martin plays an active role in School life, he is Master in Charge of Tennis, a House tutor in Robinites and is involved in Mallory expedition group and Robinite House trips. He initiated the American fellowship Scheme which sends Carthusians to help in American racquets clubs during their gap year – this has been a very popular and beneficial enterprise.
In February 2015, Martin hosted the British Amateur Doubles Championships at Charterhouse. Taking top quality tournament play to schools is an excellent exercise in spreading the gospel of Racquets. In 2013 Martin took the racquets team on tour to North America and following the success of the tour Hector Don reached the Final of the Renny Cup in the Public Schools Championships. Martin is also a House Tutor in Robinites.
