Meet the Team

Nick Beasant, BA - Director of Sport 

Nick joined Charterhouse in September 2014 as the School's first full-time Director of Sport. He is the lead for all sport-related matters within the School. Nick has worked within sport since completing his degree and commencing employment at the University of Exeter in 1999. As Director of Sport, he was responsible for the strategic and financial leadership and effective management of sport and associated activities.

During his time at Exeter, Nick coached the University Men's Hockey 1st team in the England Men's Hockey National League and in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships, having won three national titles. Internationally, Nick has been manager to the England Men's Senior Indoor Hockey squad at EuroHockey Indoor Nations Trophy Championship, the EuroHockey Indoor Nations Championship and FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup. He was also Great Britain Hockey U21 Manager in the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, where the team were bronze medallists. In the summer of 2012, Nick was selected as part of Team GB's Olympic Ambition Programme at the London Olympics.

Nick holds a Level 3 Certificate in Talented Athlete Lifestyle Support (TALS) and is a UKCC Level 2 Hockey and Cricket Coach. He teaches Social Responsibility and Citizenship and is also a House Tutor in Girdlestoneites.

Kevin Brown, BSc - Deputy Director of Sport

Kevin teaches Fourth Form Geography and is also the Deputy Director of Sport. Previously, he has been Housemaster of Weekites, Master of the Fifths, Master of the Yearlings and Assistant Housemaster in Bodeites. Born and raised in the South Island of New Zealand, Kevin began studying a Sports Science degree at the University of Otago before starting work at Charterhouse in January 1999 - while working at Charterhouse, he completed his degree at Kingston University. An avid follower and coach of all three major sports (football, hockey and cricket), he has also been heavily involved in running outdoor educational trips, most notably, overseas expeditions with World Challenge to Peru, Morocco, Mongolia, Norway, Madagascar and Tanzania. Within the Fourths’ geography curriculum, Kevin specialises in the study of the Olympic Games, it’s legacy and the regeneration of Stratford and East London.

Martin Bicknell - Director of Cricket

Martin started his career with Surrey County Cricket Club at the age of 17. In 21 years with the county, he took 1,061 wickets in first class cricket and scored 3 centuries. Winning 9 domestic honours including 3 County Championships, Martin was voted players’ player of the year 7 years in a row during the club’s golden era between 1996 and 2003. Martin represented England on 11 occasions, 4 test matches and 7 one day internationals. He retired in 2006 to take up the position of Cricket Professional at Charterhouse. Martin is a UKCC Level 4 qualified coach and as Director of Cricket he oversees the running an outstanding cricket programme which competes against all the top schools in the South East of England.

Phil Collier - Lacrosse Coach 

Phil played lacrosse for England at two world championships before moving into coaching the sport. He has since coached both the England and Scotland senior men’s teams, winning the European Championships three times with England. Phil is the current National Team Director for the England Women’s Team helping the squad to prepare for the 2017 World Cup, which will be held in Guildford, England. The campaign has got off to a good start, with Phil leading England to victory at the 2015 European Championships held in Nymburk, Czech Republic in August. This means that Phil is the first and only coach to have won both the men’s and women’s European Championships.

Phil also delivers level three coach education courses for English Lacrosse, and mentoring support to eight other coaches involved in the lacrosse talent development and high performance pathway. Phil’s coaching philosophy is to make sure that the players enjoy their lacrosse, focus on the development of the fundamental technical skills, and to try to provide them with a playing framework in which they can make best use of their individual skills.

Martin Crosby - Head of Racquets

Prior to joining Charterhouse Martin has coached at The Racquet Club of Chicago, The Racquet Club of Philadelphia and Harrow School. He comes from a long line of Racquets playing Crosbys, his great grandfather was the Professional at Portsmouth Naval College in the 1890s. Martin has held the British Pro-Am Doubles title and also sits on the Racquets Committee of the Tennis and Racquets Association. Martin plays an active role in School life, he is Master in Charge of Tennis, a House tutor in Robinites and is involved in Mallory expedition group and Robinite House trips. He initiated the American fellowship Scheme which sends Carthusians to help in American racquets clubs during their gap year – this has been a very popular and beneficial enterprise.

In February 2015, Martin hosted the British Amateur Doubles Championships at Charterhouse. Taking top quality tournament play to schools is an excellent exercise in spreading the gospel of Racquets. In 2013 Martin took the racquets team on tour to North America and following the success of the tour Hector Don reached the Final of the Renny Cup in the Public Schools Championships. Martin is also a House Tutor in Robinites.

Dan Fox, BA  - Director of Hockey

Dan Fox joined Charterhouse in September 2016 as its first full time Director of Hockey, having competed for Team GB in the Rio Olympic Games. Alongside his role at School, Dan currently plays for Premier Division Hockey side Holcombe in the England Hockey National League. In his International career Dan gained 162 caps for England and Great Britain and captained his country at the 2015 World League finals in Raipur, India. He made his Olympic debut at London 2012, scoring in the opening game against Argentina. He also has a silver medal from the 2010 Champions Trophy in Mönchengladbach and a bronze medal from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Prior to becoming a full time Olympic athlete, Dan graduated from Oxford University with a Geography degree and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. Whilst at University Dan played first-class cricket for Oxford MCCU and the MCC Combined Universities XI and he continues to play and coach cricket. For the past two years, Dan has coached hockey at Charterhouse, including being Head Coach for the Boys’ Hockey 1st XI in 2016.

Simon Hayward - Director of Football

Simon joined Charterhouse in August 2018 as Director of Football. He is a Business Economics graduate, and followed this with a 16-year career with Exeter City Football Club, most recently for the past 9 years, as Academy Director and Head of Coaching, where he helped develop a nationally recognised and respected youth development programme. Simon has coached players who have gone onto play Premier League and International football. He is a top qualified UEFA Pro Licence holder as well as possessing numerous Football Association qualifications and awards. Simon leads the coaching programme for all boys' and girls' football at Charterhouse as well as being Head Coach for the Boys’ 1st XI.

Ellery McGowan, BSc - Head of Swimming and Waterpolo

Ellery McGowan joined Charterhouse in 2003 as swimming coach and in 2009 was appointed Head of Swimming and Water Polo. A native of Tasmania, Ellery obtained her coaching qualifications at the prestigious Australian Institute of Sport and graduated in Sports Science from the University of Surrey in 2002. Ellery taught and coached swimming in Australia and Germany before taking up roles both in the School and at the Charterhouse Club, where she has taught many children and adults to swim over the years. However her involvement in teaching and coaching is dwarfed by her experience, and success, in Masters Swimming, Open Water and Marathon Swimming and also the extreme sport of Winter Swimming. Ellery took first place in her age-group in the Edmonton World Masters Games 3km Open Water event in 2005. This same year saw the first of her four relay team crossings of the English Channel. In 2010, Ellery became the oldest woman to complete the 26.4 km Lake Zurich Marathon Swim following this in 2012 with the 17.5-mile Ederle Swim (Manhattan to New Jersey, New York). She completed the iconic Manhattan Island circumnavigation (28.5 miles) in 2013 and the 26km Toroneos Gulf crossing in Greece in 2014. Introduced to all-year-round swimming in the unheated water at Tooting Bec Lido, London, Ellery took on a new challenge in Winter Swimming. She won two World Winter Swimming age-group titles at each of the 2010 and 2012 World, defending the 50m freestyle once again in 2014, inside the Arctic Circle in Finland.

Sam Plater, BSc – Head of Performance Sport

Sam joined Charterhouse from Millfield School in Somerset where he was employed as a hockey and cricket coach as a well as an assistant in the Year 9 Boarding House. Before then he studied Sport and Health Sciences at Exeter University. He was Club Captain of University of Exeter Hockey Club as well as coach of the 4th, 5th and 6th XI. He played in the 1st and 2nd XI for four seasons. Sam is a UKCC Level 2 Hockey and Cricket Coach having coached at Guildford Hockey Club for the men’s section, as well as having taken the Cricket 1st XI at Millfield. Sam heads up all aspects of Performance Sport at Charterhouse and leads the Strength and Conditioning for School athletes.This includes use of the QSC gym and athletics track as well as offering health, wellbeing and Athletic Development support for all sportspersons at Charterhouse. Sam teaches Social Responsibility and Citizenship and is also Assistant Housemaster in Weekites.
