The Charterhouse
Graduate Teacher Programme
Most graduate schemes give you a desk. We give you the floor.
A two-year training programme enabling you to experience the whole profession from your first term. Teach, mentor, lead, and become part of a boarding community. Gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a PGCE, with a salary and accommodation throughout.
Followed by an optional two-year Early Career Pathway at Charterhouse.
Responsibility From Day One
TE@CH is a two-year graduate programme for exceptional graduates who want responsibility, purpose, and professional development from the outset.
You will receive a salary, accommodation, and fully funded teacher training at one of the UK's leading schools.
You will be known, mentored, and challenged from the moment you arrive, experiencing the whole profession, not just the classroom. You'll leave with qualifications, experience, and skills that will stay with you wherever your career leads.
A start with options
The scheme takes place in our fully coeducational school, with:
- A starting salary of £34,231
- Generously subsidised accommodation on our stunning Surrey campus spread over 250 acres, 45 minutes from London, providing the opportunity to live and work within a vibrant boarding school community
- A fully-funded qualification
- The support of the Charterhouse network
Highly personalised
Become one of just a few, not one of hundreds. As part of a small cohort, you'll be known, supported and invested in from your first day to your last.
The whole profession
You will experience the whole profession, not one slice of it: teaching, pastoral care, boarding, mentoring, and co-curricular life.
The skills you will build (leading a room, explaining complex ideas, reading people, making decisions under pressure) are the ones every employer wants, and not every graduate job gives you from the outset.
A career in teaching provides room to grow and, in time, to take on wider responsibility. Even if your career takes you elsewhere, you leave with a start that gives you options and skills that travel.
A Two-Year Course - Followed by
an Optional Pathway
Year One
Most teacher training routes focus on the classroom. Your Charterhouse Year gives you the whole profession, four parts woven together:
Teach: Join a subject department and teach from your first weeks. Grow your subject knowledge, curriculum, and classroom practice, building from observation to teaching your own classes. All with the support of your subject mentor and weekly training.
Care: Get to know the whole pupil - relationships, wellbeing, safeguarding, and the moments that matter.
Live: Become part of a boarding House community and build your professional identity.
Lead: Coach a team, run a society, or start a project. Over the year, you’ll take on your own activities to lead.
Year Two
Learn to teach exceptionally well. In Year two, you will complete an accredited, employment-based training year with our university partner, gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a PGCE.
You'll continue teaching at Charterhouse with a growing timetable, supported by both school and university mentors, and deepen your subject teaching, planning, and assessment. You will also remain as part of your boarding House and contribute to co-curricular life. By the end of the year, you’re a qualified teacher, and the two-year programme is complete.
Your qualification, experience, and skills go wherever your career goes next.
Years Three & Four
The option of two further years at Charterhouse as an Early Career Teacher (ECT, the role formerly called NQT), subject to progression and available posts.
Your own timetable and the structured early career support every new teacher receives: a dedicated mentor, protected development time, deepen expertise, and begin to lead. You will complete your early career induction as an expert classroom practitioner and a trusted pastoral professional. You act as a role model in your House and, with support, begin to take on wider responsibility in your subject, pastorally, or across the School. By the end of year four, you’re ready for your next step, in the classroom or in leadership, at Charterhouse or beyond.
