Inside the Classroom
Learning at Charterhouse is about far more than just preparation for exams. Our teaching and learning prepare you for academic success, future university study, and life after education. Excitement, curiosity and passion are nurtured every day, going way beyond formal courses.
We mix academic rigour and excellence with ambition, creativity, and critical thinking. This balance ensures that each child becomes the most successful version of themselves.
Flexibility and choice sit at the heart of each pupil’s academic journey, from a wide range of course choices at GCSE, through to the option of either the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or A Levels in the Sixth Form. Everyone’s eventual destination will be unique; your education should be too.
Charterhouse is an incredibly positive environment. There is healthy competition, teamwork and encouragement. Charterhouse is the only school I know where 'Being smart is cool.'Recent leaver, Philine (Reading International Relations and Chinese at LSE)

PUPIL IN AN ACADEMIC GOWN — At the original Charterhouse in London, scholars were the only pupils to wear black academic gowns over a short black jacket with knee breeches and mortar boards. They soon gained the nickname of gownboys. The scholars also lived together in School accommodation, and these rooms also became known by the same name. Today, this heritage lives on – one of our houses is still called Gownboys, although our many scholars are now spread across all of our houses.
