Our Academic
Philosophy

At Charterhouse, we offer a high-challenge, high-encouragement learning environment.

Our teaching inspires intellectual ambition, nurtures determination and celebrates curiosity. Each interaction fosters reflection and promotes generosity of spirit in all learners.

At the centre of our learning philosophy is a commitment to the highest academic standards and to enabling each pupil to achieve their full academic potential.

We educate to develop decent human beings who will make a positive impact on the world and the people around them.

Our vision is twofold:

  • For today:
to instil a love of learning that leads to examination success and progression to elite universities around the world.

  • For tomorrow:
to prepare pupils with the skills, values and mindset needed for the future. Alongside knowledge and results, we equip young people with flexibility, resilience and a lifelong appetite for learning, ensuring they can thrive personally and professionally.

Every child needs to be challenged if they are to grow, but they must be encouraged too if they are to develop the confidence to truly succeed.  We always use language that builds confidence.

We know our pupils as people: we value their strengths and their contribution.

Our Teaching Style

Teaching is a constantly evolving craft. Our teachers regularly share best practices, observe one another, and reflect together on what works most effectively in the classroom. This culture of collaboration means that every pupil benefits from the collective expertise of the whole teaching body, not just the teacher in front of them.

Innovation is central to our approach. Teachers are encouraged to experiment with new methods and technologies, blending the best of traditional scholarship with modern tools that enhance learning.

The creative and responsible use of AI and the Microsoft Learning Suite is already embedded across the curriculum, helping pupils to work more independently, think critically and prepare for the digital demands of the future.

Our Curricula: Flexibility and Choice

Each of our curricula combines developing deep academic knowledge with the skills needed for the future: critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, communication and adaptability.

The huge range of subject flexibility and choice available to each pupil allows them to play to their strengths and pursue what they enjoy.

Every pupil is encouraged to try everything. Academic courses are enriched by electives, co-curricular opportunities and our pioneering FutureU programme. Each experience sparks curiosity, builds confidence and equips pupils with the skills to succeed at GCSE, in the Sixth Form and beyond.

The Higher & Extended Project Qualification

Pupils are able to undertake the HPQ (Higher Project Qualification at GCSE) or EPQ (Extended Project Qualification at A Level). We do this because we believe these experiences are essential to a modern education.

Both programmes develop skills that are invaluable for university and life beyond. Pupils learn how to research independently, think critically, manage their time, and present with confidence. They choose topics that excite them – from scientific investigations to creative projects – and are guided by teachers who encourage curiosity and originality.

The HPQ and EPQ are highly regarded by universities, which value the independence of thought and academic discipline that both qualifications develop. More importantly, they give our pupils the chance to explore passions, to challenge themselves, and to grow as independent learners.

The Library

Charterhouse's Library sits at the centre of school life, in every way. Led by our expert Research Librarian and team, it’s a vibrant hub for study, discovery, and reading for pleasure.

With over 30,000 books, a rich collection of e-resources, and access to world-class databases like JSTOR, The Economist and Massolit, the Library supports learning across every subject. It also curates unique collections, including The Carthusian Collection and rare books in our beautiful Gallery Room.

We’re passionate about reading. The 99, our curated reading list, has been designed to inspire and challenge. Whether pupils are researching, relaxing with a novel, or simply seeking a quiet place to think, the Library is always welcoming.
