Our Story
Founded in 1611, today we are a progressive and forward-thinking coeducational school, determined to unlock your academic potential whilst also preparing you as a genuinely future-ready young adult.
Our beautiful 250-acre campus is rich in heritage and an inspiring setting in which to live and work. When you join Charterhouse you are surrounded by a world of opportunity and connected by a true sense of belonging. All of our pupils enjoy varied and outstanding successes both inside and outside of the classroom.
We know we’ve succeeded when a Charterhouse education leads not only to academic achievement, but also to a lifetime of personal, professional, and social fulfilment.
The impact of a Charterhouse education lasts well beyond exam results, it stays with you for life.

Heritage Collection Object
Thomas Sutton was considered the richest commoner in England during the late 16th Century. Upon his death in 1611 he dedicated part of his fortune to be invested in establishing a school for 40 boys alongside an almshouse for 80 impoverished gentlemen, at a site off Charterhouse Square, on the outskirts of the City of London. Our School’s long history and heritage all stem from Sutton’s first visionary act of generosity, and his legacy continues in much of what we still do today.
