Leadership and Pupil Action

At the heart of School life is a strong belief in pupil voice and leadership. It encourages our pupils to make a positive impact on the world around them and helps to prepare them for life beyond School.

Pupil Leadership

Leadership is a defining part of life at Charterhouse. It begins with everyday actions — mentoring younger pupils, contributing to House life, and setting the tone in teams and clubs.

As pupils move through the School, so do their opportunities to lead. By the Specialists (Sixth Form), they can apply for senior roles such as Monitor, Head of House or Chair of a Pupil Action Committee — taking on real responsibility and making a meaningful difference.

Leadership at Charterhouse is both authentic. It’s grounded in service, shaped by community, and driven by purpose. Our pupils leave with the confidence, character and humility to lead wherever life takes them.

Pupil Action

Pupils play an active role in shaping life at Charterhouse. One of the key ways they do this is through our ten Pupil Action Committees (PACs).

Each PAC focuses on a core area of school life, from Sustainability and Wellbeing to Inclusion, Safeguarding and Co-curricular. Led by senior pupils and supported by staff, they are open to volunteers from every year group.

PACs are hubs of discussion, action and innovation. Pupils plan events, lead campaigns, and champion the causes that matter most to them. Their ideas are heard (and often brought to life), helping to shape the culture and future of the School.

Specialist (Sixth Form) House Monitors work closely with the Heads of Houses to create a safe and happy environment, organise activities, and support pupils. Beyond Houses, School Monitors are an important link between staff and pupils and meet regularly with senior staff.

Service and Volunteering

Shape your understanding of our shared responsibility to society and to our planet.

Responsibility, duty and service are hallmarks of a Charterhouse education – they always have been. Every day since 1611 our pupils have lived their School motto: Deo Dante Dedi, ‘God having given, I gave’, emphasising their awareness and responsibility to contribute positively to society.

Contributing to the World Around You

Service is central to life at Charterhouse — shaping character, building community, and inspiring action.

Pupils lead from the front: volunteering locally, raising funds, mentoring younger pupils, supporting charities and driving outreach. Many initiatives are their own, born from compassion and delivered with purpose.

Through our Charities and Inclusion Committees, pupils coordinate regular campaigns, awareness days and collections for local and global causes.

Service and volunteering are not just about helping others. They build confidence, broaden perspectives and form habits of kindness and responsibility that last a lifetime.

In doing so, our pupils grow in confidence, empathy and leadership. They learn that true leadership means stepping up — not for recognition, but for the good of others.

Service leadership is an integral part of life at Charterhouse and encourages our pupils to make a positive impact on the world around them, preparing them for life beyond School.
