Gownboys

Gownboys occupies a central position in Founders’ Court and offers stunning views over the campus towards the sports centre and playing fields.

The panelled dining room and hall, featuring a 120-foot chimney, remain untouched, providing a real sense of history and heritage within a twenty-first-century boarding environment.

Gownboys is the oldest of the Charterhouse boarding Houses, originally established in 1614 to house the scholars.

In Gownboys, we set out to foster a strong sense of family, where the emphasis is on everyone being kind, encouraging, and their best selves.
I encourage all boys to take full advantage of the amazing opportunities available here. In the spirit of our School values: treat yourself and others with kindness, take responsibility for your learning and what you want to achieve, persevere through the challenges that will come your way, have the moral courage to forge the right path, and be open-minded as you meet new people and embrace new activities and ways of doing things. And, most important of all, have fun along the way!
Many Gownboys over the years have gone on to make a significant impact on society — whether in politics, the arts, the church, science, or social responsibility. In Gownboys, our team wants to see all the boys make the most of the fantastic opportunities available to them, discover what they love, and what they are wired to do, so they can make a positive difference in, and to, the world around them.

When I first arrived at Charterhouse, all the pictures on the walls of the sports teams, smiling and hugging each other, made me think two things: firstly, this was a very sporty House; and secondly, I would not fit in with the older pupils since they all knew each other so well. I was wrong on both counts.
Gownboys is a very open House when it comes to co-curricular activities, and I had never before seen such kindness from the older years. When I greet the next generation of Gownboys, I hope to share that same warmth with them — to show what it feels like to be part of a family.
