SCROLL

This year, we launched a new initiative designed to spark curiosity and celebrate the wonders of science beyond the classroom. Every Saturday, pupils volunteer to take centre stage to research and present a talk on a scientific topic of their own choosing – sharing their passion and discoveries with fellow pupils and beaks (teachers).

With just two events so far this Quarter (term), we’ve already explored the cutting edge of nuclear fusion, uncovered the truths behind the ‘not-so-nob’ noble gases, examined how lithium is powering sustainability, and delved into the world of gene editing.

It’s inspiring to see our pupils leading the way, bringing science to life, and building a community of enthusiastic learners.

I realI really enjoyed getting the opportunity to present at Thank Science It’s Saturday, because it helped me hugely in developing my skills of public speaking and research. While doing my research about lithium extraction, I found that, although lithium is vital for sustainability, it is crucial that we make our methods of extraction more sustainable and our batteries more energy-dense and efficient.

Delivering the talk was a fantastic experience. I have always enjoyed sharing scientific ideas especially in a topic of my interest. In my talk, I explained the basic mechanisms of the most popular gene editing technology - CRISPR Cas9 and a brief overview of my STEM project gene editing for autoluminiscent plants and how potentially natural light sources can replace electric light sources which would contribute significantly to global conservation.
