The Groundlings Theatre Company proudly presented The Playhouse Apprentice.
Written in 2016, The Playhouse Apprentice is an ensemble piece by acclaimed playwright Jessica Swale, who is currently enjoying enormous success as the bookwriter for Paddington – The Musical. The company gave three performances, Monday 19 to Wednesday 21 January, to enthusiastic audiences.
We were incredibly fortunate to welcome guest director Michael Vivian to Charterhouse. An actor, writer, director, drama coach, and role-play expert with over 30 years of experience across theatre, screen, and behind the camera, Michael’s expertise, generosity, and insight made this production a real highlight. It was something of a coup to have him working with our pupils, who gained a huge amount from the experience.
A memorable, collaborative production that showcased the strength and talent of the young company.
Like Ms Swale, I am a lover of ensemble theatre, so when Mr Chisnall asked me to direct, I didn’t think twice. Talent has no boundaries, least of all age, and our young Groundlings company have relished the challenge of bringing this play to you, embracing the idea of doubling roles, of creating the world of late Elizabethan London, but moreover finding and exploring their storytelling voices as a true ensemble. It has been a privilege to work alongside them and watch them grow as a company.
Michael Vivian, DIRECTOR

I found The Playhouse Apprentice a truly joyful way to spend an evening. To witness such team spirit and courage from a fantastic group of young performers was genuinely inspiring. It was a caring and thoughtful performance of a lovely play.
Groundlings has been a wonderful opportunity for our youngest performers over the last few years, and it is very much here to stay. Congratulations to everyone involved for such spirit, commitment, and talent.
DEAN CHISNALL, DIRECTOR of PERFORMING ARTS
