SCROLL

The first half of Quarter (term) has seen impressive progress across Charterhouse sport, highlighted by national success in padel, strong cup runs in hockey and football, and growing participation across the board. A fantastic period of achievement and development for all teams.

Hockey

The hockey programme continues to move in a positive direction, with another strong week of performances across all year groups. It has been fantastic to see the hard work paying off as the programme continues to develop.

This week saw the 1st XI, U15A and U14A girls in cup action. The U15A team put on a great display with a 2–1 victory against Canford in the Independent Schools Cup. The 1st XI also impressed with a hard-fought 2–0 win over St Teresa’s in the second round of the U18 England Hockey Cup. Meanwhile, the U14A team came up against a strong St George’s side, who were well-deserved winners on the day. They will now look ahead to a fixture against Cranleigh in the plate competition.

We now turn our attention to a midweek block of fixtures against Bradfield College, followed by the much-anticipated hockey tour to Belgium and Holland over Exeat (half-term) – an exciting opportunity for development and team building. We wish them all the best.

Football

Boys':

Weeks 5 and 6 have been a busy but brilliant period in the football programme. The block against Eton was fantastic to see, with some competitive results and a strong 3–2 win for our 1st XI boys, who held on to defeat their close rivals.

Girls':

Our 1st XI and U15 girls’ squads kicked off their cup campaigns this week, both coming away with convincing wins (4–0 and 5–0 respectively) to progress to the second round. We now await the draw to see who they will face next, confident that they will give 100% and hopefully advance further in the competition.

Leading into Exeat, our U14 boys take on Royal Russell in the Elgin League, and the senior boys’ 1st XI play their first cup match against Milton Abbey. We wish both teams the very best of luck.

Padel

Our U18 Girls team were crowned National Inter-School Champions 2025, with the Boys reaching the quarter-finals and the Mixed Team narrowly missing the final on countback.

The girls won 14–4 in the final against Seaford College – a dominant performance to round off a well-deserved title win.

Netball

Preseason Netball has continued in preparation for the Surrey tournaments.

Senior Teams:

The senior teams played Kingston Grammar, with the 1st and 3rd teams dominating their games. The 2nd team had a close match but unfortunately didn’t secure the win this time.

U15s & U14s:

The U15s and U14s faced Priors Field. The U14 team produced a strong performance to secure a win, while the U15s had an unfortunate loss.

In the U19 Surrey Schools competition, we played some excellent netball against tough opposition, winning against SWPS and St Teresa’s. However, when facing more established teams such as Guildford High and St Catherine’s, Bramley, their greater experience caught us out. With time, we hope to become a more cohesive side.

Fives

A 9-pair extravaganza took place at Charterhouse against the auld enemy, Harrow.

On another fine day in West Surrey, Jan & Bertie struggled to get going on Court Zero, losing 3–12 in the 1st set at 1st pair to a Harrow duo who played very few loose shots and quickly found their length. Despite reaching 10–10 in the 2nd set and improving their volleying, they narrowly lost 13–14, going down 0–2 in their rubber. At the other end, Harrow conceded their 9th pair to the U15 pair Sean & Teyen, bringing the overall score to 1–1.

In the other two U15 games, Pier Giorgio & Daniel at 7th pair narrowly lost 11–12 in a marathon single-set match, while scratch pairing Ed & Curtis quickly defeated Harrow’s 8th pair. The overall score was now 2–2.

Jake & Lenny at 4th pair got to step against their opponents with some very tidy Fives at times, and so were a little unfortunate to end up 0:2 in their game… and it wasn't looking better at 5th pair, where George & Arthur lost their 1st set too... Inspired, however, on his birthday, Arthur (and George) came back to win both the 2nd and 3rd sets – what a result! Overall 3:3...

Tim & Henry at 6th pair also got to step in one set but lost 11–12, 6–12. Overall, we were now 3:4 down with just two matches left out there...

The omens were not good: Jules had strained his left wrist in goal and had to play the whole match with just his right hand at 2nd pair with Matteo. Fantastically, they won their 1st set 12–5, including a few necessary and curiously effective back-handers, but by the 2nd set Harrow's 2nd pair had got going, and soon it was 10:10. Cometh the hour, cometh the Bahamians. Like a latter-day Chris Woakes going in to bat with a dislocated shoulder (but with a better outcome), Jules (and Matteo) had one last surge and closed the match out by 2 sets to love, levelling things at 4:4...

Everything now hinged on the outcome of the 9th and final match and our 3rd pair, Jack & Sacha...

We had got off to a flier in the 1st set, winning 12–3, but Harrow had fought back to step-all in the 2nd set and levelled 13–14 at 1-set-all...

After two hours and eight other matches, it was all down to a deciding set... Jack & Sacha started slowly and were soon 1:5 behind. Serendipitously for Charterhouse, Harrow's 3rd pair decided to identify as Matt Fitzpatrick in a Sunday singles and sensed they could snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Soon it was 7:7, and the rest of the Charterhouse U16s all arrived to spur on their top pair. Sacha couldn't miss, and Jack could only volley the poor Harrovians into submission. 2:1 to Charterhouse at 3rd pair and a historic 5:4 win against a much-fancied Harrow side on our new courts.

Squash

Boys':

The 1st V have played five fixtures so far this season, winning against Wellington, Radley, and Tonbridge, and losing against two of our toughest opponents, Epsom and Harrow. This marks our best start to the season in some time.

Girls':

Girls’ squash continues to gain in popularity, with Ayah, Second Year Specialist (Year 13), and Rachel, First Year Specialist (Year 12), regularly playing for the 2nd V. The girls’ 1st V narrowly lost 2–3 against Wellington.

Squash in the Under School is particularly strong at the moment, with U16s, U15s, and U14s playing for the 1st and 2nd V.

Basketball

Basketball has proven to be a popular sport to start off the school year at Charterhouse, with 54 pupils trying out in the first month. The senior team had their first fixture of the season at the end of Week 6, facing off against the Old Carthusians, with a final score of Charterhouse 51–60 Old Carthusians. Much can be learned from this first fixture, which will stand the Carthusians in good stead for their upcoming matches against Hurtwood House, Eton, and Tonbridge.
