Across Weeks 7 and 8 of Long Quarter (Spring Term), Charterhouse pupils have been in action across a packed schedule of fixtures, tournaments, and house competitions. From hosting major invitation tournaments and securing narrow wins to progressing in national cup competitions, it has been a fortnight of closely fought contests and strong performances across the courts and pitches.
Football
Senior Invitational Tournament
Weeks 7 and 8 of LQ (Spring Term) have been a busy time in the football programme. We hosted the Senior Girls’ Invitational Football Tournament, with 23 teams entered from schools across the country. Charterhouse entered two senior teams, with both progressing to the quarter-finals of the Plate competition. The Cup competition was won by Rossall School, and the Plate by Millfield’s 2nd team.
U15 Girls’ Tournament
The U15 girls put on a great display at a tournament held by Lord Wandsworth College (LWC), coming second in their group and narrowly missing out on the semi-finals of the Cup after losing 1–0 to LWC.
Senior Boys
Our senior boys had a strong block against Wimbledon College during Week 7, with wins for all three teams.
Senior Girls’ House Football
Week 8 saw the start of the Senior Girls’ House competition. Round 1 produced some really competitive matches and saw many different people getting involved in the games. Going into Round 2, Weekites have the lead on 18 points, with Northbrook and Sutton close behind – all to play for.
Senior Girls’ 1st XI
The Senior Girls’ 1st XI had a competitive fixture against King Edward’s Witley, winning 3–0 in what was the last game on Big Ground for some of our Second Year Specs (Year 13).
Boys’ 2nd XI
Our boys’ 2nd XI were entered into a new cup competition this term and made it through to the quarter-final round against City of London School after a 5–1 win over Merchant Taylors’ School. After a closely fought match, a comeback from 2–0 down was not quite enough, with City of London scoring a last-minute winner to take the match 3–2. A great effort from our team, and we hope to see them go one step further next year.
With the final two weeks of LQ coming up, we look forward to the finals of the Senior Girls’ House competition, the Staff v Monitors match, girls’ fixtures against Bradfield College, and the 132nd set of fixtures between our senior boys and Liverpool Ramblers AFC.
Netball
Senior Netball Tournament
Weeks 7 and 8 have been busy on the netball courts following the fantastic success of the UAE Netball and Football tour. We returned ready to take on the rest of the season and started strongly with excellent performances in the senior tournament.
Our 1st team reached the final of the Cup but unfortunately lost 4–5 to Cranleigh. Ashley was voted Player of the Tournament, which is outstanding considering she is in the Fourth Form.
Our 2nd team won the Plate tournament, beating our 3rd team in the final. Our 4th team also made the Plate competition but lost to our 3rd team in the semi-finals. Tilly, First Year Specialist (Year 12), was named Best Player in the Plate tournament, making it remarkable that two of our players were recognised in this way.
U14
Our U14s played Cranleigh but were a team down, while our U14E team beat their U14D team.
House Netball
House netball is well underway, with the senior tournament finishing this week alongside the Under School competition. Sutton won the Fourth House Netball tournament, while Fletcherites beat Northbrook in the final of the Under School competition.
Prep School Netball Tournaments
Over the last couple of weeks, we have hosted more than 200 junior players for our prep school tournaments, and the standard was very high. Heath Mount won both the U10 and U11 tournaments, with some outstanding netball on display.
This week, we finish our netball season with a senior and U15 block against Brighton College, while the seniors play their Friday Night Lights fixture against Reed’s.
Next week, charity netball is the focus on Tuesday, when we will look to raise money for Charlie’s Promise, a charity close to the School’s heart.
Hockey
Block Fixtures vs Churcher’s College
Week 7 saw all teams in action against local rivals Churcher’s College, with several standout performances across the weekend. Most notably, the 1st XI recorded a fantastic 7–0 win against a well-drilled and organised side.
The U14B secured a strong 2–1 win, while the U15D followed with an impressive 3–2 victory. The U14D played two 7-a-side games and came out victorious on both occasions. The U15A played in a high-quality match that finished 3–3.
U14 House Hockey
Saturday saw the U14s in House action, which again provided an excellent few hours on the Northbrook Astros, with the standard of play superb and several tightly contested semi-finals.
In the Cup competition, Robinites defeated a talented Bodeites side, while Gownboys beat Daviesites on shuffles to progress to the Cup final.
In the Plate competition, Pageites beat Saunderites to reach the final, while Verites overcame Hodgsonites. We look forward to the finals on 17 March.
Senior and Removes House Hockey
Week 8 was another busy week on the hockey front, with all Houses involved in the Senior and Removes House Hockey competitions. The seniors continued their pool stages, with several Houses showing real quality.
The Removes competition saw the semi-finals played, and we will now see Daviesites take on Saunderites in the Cup final, while Gownboys face Pageites in the Plate final. Both finals will take place on 17 March.
1st XI
The 1st XI were in Cup action in the last 16 against Reigate, where they secured a 4–2 victory to advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face Ardingly.
Other Fixtures
The 4th XI and 5th XI also had strong fixtures against Seaford College’s 2nd XI and 3rd XI. The 4th XI finished 3–1 winners, while the 5th XI, having gone 2–0 up, drew 2–2.
Friday Night Lights
We now look forward to the annual Friday Night Lights fixtures against RGS on 13 March.
Basketball
Post Exeat (Half Term), the Charterhouse basketball team has played two close games, beating Tonbridge at home 46–45 and Bradfield College away 55–52.
The team continues to be ably led by the Captains of Basketball, Raymond and Nolan, Second Year Specialists (Year 13).
Racquets
It has been an extremely busy couple of weeks for the racquets squads, with a number of school fixtures alongside internal competitions.
vs Harrow
Before Exeat (Half Term), the boys played away at Harrow, where all four matches were very competitive. Zac and George, Fifth Form (Year 11) won 3–1. At the same time, the Fourth Form and the girls’ 1st pair played against Cheltenham at Queen’s Club. The Fourth Form played a series of one-game matches, partnering with a different player each time, and won six games to two. This is a great testament to how much they have improved in their first year of playing racquets.
vs Haileybury
Since Exeat (Half Term), the girls have played against Haileybury at Queen’s. The Colts pair, Megan and Steffi, won 3–0, while the Fourth Form (Year 9) players, Charlie, Estella, and Izzy, beat Haileybury’s Removes (Year 10) pair, which was fantastic to see.
vs Eton
Last week, the boys travelled to Eton, which proved to be a great test. The team fought hard throughout the matches. The 1st pair, Alex and Ollie, battled back brilliantly from 2–0 down to level the match at 2–2, but unfortunately lost the final game in a tight contest.
This week, we have our final School fixture of the Quarter (term), a co-ed match away at Wellington College, where the pupils will play both racquets and real tennis. This will provide excellent preparation for the National Schools competition, which begins on the first Sunday of the Easter holidays.
Badminton
Badminton has also seen a standout moment in recent weeks, with Charterhouse winning the Charterhouse Cup against strong competition from Winchester, Christ’s Hospital, Epsom, Tiffin, and Wellington.
It proved to be an incredibly close contest. Both Charterhouse and Winchester finished with 14 wins from their 20 games, meaning the result was decided on total points scored. Winchester finished on 262 points, while Charterhouse edged ahead with 268 – about as close as it gets.
The competition was a great success overall, with several visiting teams commenting on how much they enjoyed coming to compete, praising the friendly welcome, smooth organisation and the match food.
Our top four players are now due to compete in the Harrow Cup in March, where they will face another strong field and even stiffer competition.
