On Sunday 30 November, two committed First Year Specialists (Year 12), Tom and Ben, will run over 60km – from our School in Godalming all the way to The Charterhouse in Southwark, London – to raise money for an incredible charity, F6it.

Ben and Tom have known each other for nearly ten years, sharing a long-standing love of sport that, in recent years, has evolved into a passion for running. “We’ve always wanted to take on an endurance challenge like this,” they said. “The idea actually started as a bit of a joke,” Tom explained. “One of our teachers in House, Mr Sibley, mentioned it, and I passed it on to Ben – also as a joke – but then he took it a bit too seriously.”

“It was all quite spontaneous and impulsive, really. We only decided a couple of weeks ago,” they laughed. “We’ve probably underestimated the challenge, but it’s going to be interesting.”

Reflecting on the run between the two Charterhouses, they said, “We thought it was a great distance for a proper challenge – far enough to test us, but not so far that it becomes impossible.”

It also feels quite special to link the two Charterhouses in this way. We haven’t been to the London site before, so it’ll be great for this run to take us there for the first time.

Speaking about their chosen charity, they explained, “F6it helps children with disabilities connect through fitness, holding events and activities that make sport accessible to everyone.”

“They’re a small, local charity, and we liked the idea of supporting a cause rooted in fitness,” they said.

“My love of running started quite randomly,” said Ben. “I picked it up in the summer after my first year, and it just grew from there. Running’s a really individual sport, so it’s quite self-driven. I’ve joined Aldershot and Farnham Running Club just down the road, and it’s great to run competitively,” Ben added.

“At school, Mr Hadley has been a big influence through the cross-country team — he’s helped us both a lot. Still, running’s something that really depends on your own motivation.”

We both love sport – it teaches you things you don’t always learn in the classroom – so helping others have the same opportunities really means a lot to us.

When asked about what message they want to send to others in the Charterhouse community, they reflected, “I think the message is to just throw yourself into things. The School has so much to offer, and it would be a bit of a waste to spend five years here just coasting.”

They added, “We often forget how lucky we are to be in this position – so make the most of it and get involved wherever you can.”
