A young photographer with an actor’s heart, Jonty (First Year Specialist – Year 12), has become one of the most recognisable creative voices on campus, both behind the lens and on the stage, and we had the chance to catch up with him about his passion for photography and dream of becoming an actor.
Long before he ever owned a camera, Jonty was already looking at the world like a photographer. He remembers being very little, standing beside his dad at airshows, “occasionally having a go with his camera,” and feeling something spark. When he eventually received a camera of his own, everything clicked into place. “From there it’s just taken off,” he says – and it shows.
Around School, Jonty has become a familiar sight: camera in hand, eyes scanning for the moment that tells the story. He photographs everything from concerts to House events, but sport is where he feels most at home. “It’s incredibly tough to pick a favourite thing to photograph,” he admits, “but if I had to choose, it would be the hockey. It’s wonderful to see how happy people get, seeing photos of them playing a sport they love.”
Some moments stay with him more than others. He still talks about the 5th XI boys’ football team scoring the final goal of their unbeaten season, and the electric atmosphere of the 1st XI hockey national final. “Those have to be my favourites so far,” he says – the kind of moments where emotion and pride collide in a single frame.
Jonty’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed. Last year, he was named the winner of the School’s photography competition, which drew an extraordinary response from pupils across year groups. With so many creative and technically impressive entries, choosing a winner was no easy task, yet Jonty’s image, a striking portrait of a European Robin (Erithacus rubecula), stood out for its quiet beauty. |

Part of what makes his photography so distinctive is the way he uses the campus itself. “I try my best to incorporate some of the amazing architecture we have here,” he explains. “We’re so lucky to have such an stunning campus.”
But photography is only one side of Jonty’s creative life. Earlier this year, he stepped into the spotlight in the School’s production of We Will Rock You, an experience he describes with unmistakable joy. “It was one of the most magical experiences I’ve had in my school career,” he says. “Performing alongside such a strong cast, seeing people’s talents develop was amazing. It’s truly an unforgettable feeling being on stage.”

Besides taking photos and performing, you’ll frequently find me out on the golf course. Though, I am by no means the next Rory McIlroy, but I do love spending quality time with my mates playing nine holes.

Looking ahead, Jonty hopes to pursue acting, with photography remaining a passion he’ll carry with him. “I think it will most likely remain a prevalent hobby of mine,” he expressed.
He credits Charterhouse with helping him discover a new side of his craft. “I never considered sports photography properly until Mr Sandbach (Director of Sport) approached me with the opportunity,” he reflects. “It’s allowed me to pursue another one of my passions here at School.”
In the end, what stands out most is how naturally Jonty embodies the School’s try everything ethos. Whether he’s behind the lens, on stage, out in the field studying for his Geography A Level, or swinging on the golf course, he throws himself wholeheartedly into the creative life of the School. |
