Charterhouse played host to the largest fives match in the School’s history!

To celebrate the reopening of our courts after their summer refurbishment, over 50 pupils, parents, staff, and Old Carthusians (OCs) came together for our first fixture of the season against local team The Brigands.

Thanks to generous donations from parents, OCs, and the fives community, the School has been able to resurrect one of our original courts, giving us a total of nine available courts for the first time in more than 50 years. In addition, we have been able to renovate our existing courts, meaning Charterhouse now boasts some of the best fives facilities anywhere in the world.

Nine pairs of pupils and nine pairs of adults competed in a tightly fought contest. The Brigands came away with the win overall, but School pairs achieved wins against these experienced players for the first time in many years. Max and Humphrey, Second Year Specialists (Year 13), alongside Jules and Matteo, First Year Specialists (Year 12), achieved particularly impressive wins against very strong opposition.

After the match, we retired to the Peter May Pavilion for a fantastic dinner which brought together players and supporters of all ages.

Fives has grown quickly at Charterhouse over the past five years, going from just three regular pairs in 2021 to more than 20 today. We are delighted to be able to enjoy our new courts and look forward to hosting Westminster, Harrow, and Eton in the coming weeks.
