Pupils and parents had the privilege of hearing from the inspiring David Dein, former vice chairman of Arsenal and a founding member of the Premier League. Massimo (Year 13), who introduced Mr Dein to the room, reports on the event:
'On Monday 30 September, pupils and parents were fortunate enough to hear from the ever-inspiring David Dein. Not only is Mr Dein the former vice chairman of Arsenal, but he is also a pivotal figure in the world of football and a founding member of what is the Premier League. Given this, this event was highly anticipated among parents and pupils.
He began his talk at 5pm in Hall, as the first Charterhouse in Conversation event this year. David started out as a businessman from London, rising to success due to his inspirational mindset and guiding principles. He shared many of these principles with us, emphasizing to the audience the importance of communication and relationships in his world. David was constantly engaging with the audience throughout the hour talk, making sure his messages were getting across. At the end of the hour, David answered several questions from pupils about how to go about reaching their goals. On top of this, he also answered questions about the current situation with the premier league, regarding Manchester City’s possible point deduction.
What came across most clearly about David, was how genuine his character is. As someone who has reached the upper echelons of society and ‘made it’, it was clear he still prioritised humility above all else. His talk was so insightful, filled with good humour and most definitely left everyone with a lot to reflect on afterwards. He made it clear that in whatever endeavour you pursue, talent always comes second to a good attitude.
It was incredibly refreshing to hear such a profound figure, in an industry that doesn’t always have the best reputation, to value humility, personal connection and respect above all else.
Speaking to David afterwards, it seemed he cared about what I had to say as much as I cared about what he had to say. This showed me what a fantastic person he is, and how he deserved all his successes.'
