Charterhouse offers a number of scholarships and exhibitions each year.
Some carry a small financial award, but primarily exist to recognise distinctive academic ability or a special talent and promise in Art, Drama, Music or Sport. All assessments take place in open competition and Scholarships, Awards and Exhibitions are awarded solely on merit.
Scholarships and Awards (not including Exhibitions) may be supported by bursary assistance as and when financial circumstances necessitate.
Academic Scholars (Foundation Scholars) at Charterhouse set a positive example to the academic life of the School through their enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity and drive. In accordance with our statutes, there are never fewer than fifty Foundation Scholars in the School at any one time.
The Foundation Scholarships are offered each year to those that exhibit a high level of academic attainment and intellectual curiosity in Charterhouse’s own examinations and interview, which take place at the end of April, prior to entry in September. Exhibitions are awarded to those who show special promise in one particular subject or for a general performance that is sound but below that appropriate for the award of a Foundation Scholarship.
Candidates sit examinations in Mathematics, English, Science and three other subjects chosen from French, Spanish, Latin, Geography, Additional Mathematics and History. In addition, Greek may also be taken.
The Reginald and Maurice Benn Scholarshipfor distinction in Classics in the Foundation Scholarship Examination is offered annually and this award may be held in additional to other Scholarships.

The Dance programme at Charterhouse continues to develop and thrive and it is an increasingly popular co-curricular option among both boys and girls.
Classes are open to all Carthusians, from beginners to advanced dancers. We currently offer Musical Theatre Jazz, Contemporary, Tap and Ballet. Acro will also be on the programme from September 2023 and discussions are underway to further increase the range of genres on offer due to growing demand.
We are fortunate to be able to run our dance provision in partnership with the highly-regarded Phillipa Hogan School of Dance. All classes are taught by experienced and dance professionals and take place in our Sports Centre studios and Theatre. Our dance partnership allows us to run classes that are exclusively for Carthusians as part of our co-curricular provision, but also allows our pupils to register with the Dance School for Ballet and some other classes, and so work alongside young dancers from outside Charterhouse to an advanced level, and work towards RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) examinations if they so wish.
Our Dance programme is closely linked with what goes on in the School's Theatre, providing dancers with regular opportunities to perform on stage. Among other events, our annual musical is invariably a wonderful showcase for their talents, and pupils have the chance to be dance captains when productions require.
July 2024 sees the start of our exciting Ben Travers Theatre development which includes the building of a new studio performance space, allowing us to develop Dance within our Performing Arts programme at Charterhouse even further. As part of this expansion, we introduced Dance prizes this year for Under School and Sixth Form, and we are now delighted to be launching our first- ever Dance Scholarships.
Awards
Scholars will be offered a free Dance class with the Dance School each week.
Our shows' Dance Captains will be selected from among our Scholars for productions.
Scholars will be invited to perform at the School's Open Days
Our Expectations
We fully expect our Scholars to take a very active part in flying the Dance flag at Charterhouse:
Taking part in as many classes as possible throughout the year.
Leading from the front with dance numbers in all shows and being a visible presence on and off stage, and setting an example in doing so.
Helping to promote and publicise their performances within School.
