Artificial intelligence is reshaping how knowledge is shared and applied, and its influence on education, work, and society will only continue to grow. Many schools focus on teaching pupils how to use new tools. At Charterhouse, we go further.

The Charterhouse Intelligence Passport (ChIP) is our whole-school AI & innovation programme designed to help shape our pupils’ modern intellectual development: how they think, reason and lead in an AI-shaped world.

We do not provide an education in dependence on AI, focusing instead on independent and intelligent thinking using AI.

A Leading Approach to AI in UK Education

As AI becomes more commonplace, the most valuable skills will not be AI tool mastery alone, but the ability to combine intelligent use with clarity of thought.

ChIP places our pupils at the forefront of this revolution by focusing on an AI education that is designed to last, not to chase trends. Rather than centring on specific platforms or tools, our programme develops the type of enduring human capabilities that universities, professions and society will continue to value:

  • Judgement over automation
  • Mastery over trends
  • Understanding over output
  • Responsibility over convenience
  • Leadership over reliance

This ensures that pupils are prepared not only for today’s AI landscape, but for the far more complex world which they will inherit.

Pioneering the Future: Charterhouse Partners with Researchers at Cambridge University to Pilot an Accredited AI Literacy Course

As a core element of our ChIP programme, Charterhouse is proud to announce a ground-breaking collaboration with AIME Education and researchers with the Faculty of Education at Cambridge University.

In an era where technology evolves faster than ever, we believe in preparing our pupils, not just to navigate the future, but to shape it. We are delighted to introduce a pioneering AI Literacy course for the Removes (Yr 10) and First Year Specialists (Yr 12), delivered as part of a national pilot programme that positions Charterhouse pupils among the very first in the UK to experience this level of forward-thinking curriculum.

This collaboration ensures that our pupils will receive instruction grounded in the latest pedagogical research and technological insights. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded a Certificate in AI from Cambridge’s Digital Education Futures Initiative (DEFI) - a valuable and prestigious recognition of their achievement that will stand out on any future academic portfolio.

Our AI Operating System for the Future

We are establishing a robust educational framework designed to guide pupils through a period of ongoing technological change. Our strategy is governed by five key Protocols that will provide the ongoing standard for digital intelligence and innovation at Charterhouse.

Protocol 1: Fluency

It starts with the language of the future.

We move beyond basic proficiency to true fluency, teaching pupils to navigate modern AI platforms with effectiveness, confidence, and integrity.

Protocol 2: Creation

To understand the machine, one must build it.

We transition pupils from users to creators, offering hands-on experience in engineering the hardware, software, and Large Language Models (LLMs) that will power our world.

Protocol 3: Ethics & Safety
With great computing power comes great responsibility.

As AI systems become pervasive, we instil a strong moral compass. Pupils explore ethical dilemmas and societal impacts, learning not just how to build technology, but when and why (or why not) to use it.
Protocol 4: Teaching & Research
We practice what we preach.

By leveraging data-driven pedagogy and academic partnerships, we use AI to refine our own teaching methods, creating a personalised educational experience for every Carthusian.
Protocol 5: Real-World Applications
The classroom is just the beginning.

We bridge the gap between theory and industry, giving pupils first-hand insight into how AI is reshaping economies and careers.

ChIP in Our Fourth Form (Yr9):
Foundations for Independent Digital Thinking

Throughout our Fourth Form (Year 9), ChIP focuses on foundational understanding and good intellectual AI habits.

Pupils are introduced to AI as a powerful system that must be understood, questioned and used responsibly - never as a substitute for thinking. Pupils develop confidence without dependence, learning to question AI outputs and apply ethical judgement from the outset.

Fourth Form Course in AI Literacy & Digital Intelligence

Delivered through our FutureU curriculum, this programme establishes safe, ethical and thoughtful engagement with AI. Key areas include:

1. Understanding what AI is - and what it is not

2. Managing personal data and digital identity

3. Using AI chatbots responsibly

4. Avoiding plagiarism and protecting originality

5. Evaluating truth, bias and misinformation

6. Considering the environmental impact of AI

Our pupils must learn when AI can accelerate learning, when it must be questioned, and when human judgment should lead.

Technology may assist thinking, but responsibility for thinking always remains with the human mind.

AI Champions: Leading the Conversation on the Future of Artificial Intelligence

Acting as the link between pupils and leadership, our AI Champions ensure that AI technology is used with purpose.

They define the boundary where AI ends and human creativity begins, championing software as a partner in learning rather than a substitute for effort.

By helping peers use these tools responsibly, they protect the value of a Charterhouse education and demonstrate that the human mind remains our most powerful asset

ChIP in Action

ChIP is a whole-school framework, not a single course. Learning takes place in varied ways, to ensure coherence, progression and intellectual rigour:

  • Across everyday classroom practice, as AI-aware thinking is modelled and reinforced in subject teaching
  • Through dedicated programmes and lessons, where pupils engage explicitly with AI literacy, application, development and ethics
  • Through co-curricular activities and leadership pathways, allowing pupils to apply learning in authentic contexts
