Sport Round-Up

It's been fantastic to witness the pupils return to the sports fields with renewed energy and determination.

Fixture Updates

Football

It’s been a busy start to the term for those involved in Charterhouse football, with many teams enjoying success in their fixtures both in terms of result and individual performances. The boys’ teams have had some competitive fixtures against their opponents which include; Whitgift, Winchester College and Bradfield College, and the girls’ teams have made a great start to the year taking on Sevenoaks, Dunottar School, George Abbot School and St Edmunds School. Girls' U15 Football had a close match with Priorsfield.

House football kicked off two weeks ago, starting with our competition for the fourths and removes. Well done to Fletcherites for winning the Under School Girls' House Football. Keep an eye on the Charterhouse Sport Instagram for updates on further results! The greatly anticipated Boys’ Senior competition will start on Tuesday 1st October, and we are looking forward to seeing some exciting games and displays of sportsmanship and fair play.

Both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams will be starting their ISFA Cup campaigns in October, with the U15 Boys way to New Hall School on Thursday of this week. We wish all of our teams luck in the first rounds of their competitions.

Hockey

Hockey has enjoyed a few great block fixtures against some of the toughest hockey playing schools down south in Wellington College and Epsom College where we were able to show our growth as a program and display some quality hockey throughout the fixtures. The first four weeks saw us take on Wellington College, Lord Wandsworth College, and Epsom College with all the games being played in great fashion and highlighting our school values.

The 1st XI, 15A and 14A teams began their cup runs last week. The 1st XI had a great win, 4-1, over Pangbourne College with some exciting hockey being played and will now play St Teresa’s. The 15A team had a bye in round 1 and will now face Alleyns school in Round 2. The 14A team had a very tough first round fixture against Cranleigh school. They will now move into the national plate.

House hockey is in full swing with round 1 from the Seniors, Removes and Fourths all complete where the standard of the games was exceptional and once again highlights the grow and the skill levels in the program and how bright the future for Charterhouse hockey is looking. We are looking forward to round 2 and finals week.

The Hockey programme looks forward to block fixtures against Churcher's College and Christ Hospital over the coming weeks

Cricket

The Under 15 girls had their Tier 2 Surrey Cup Final carried over from last academic year. They were drawn against t a very strong Tiffin side. Our team was captained by Hope Horne and she led our team very well with direction and enthusiasm. Tiffin had a very strong opening batter who retired at 50 runs so we were worried at the time but in the end they got 133. Excellent bowling by Hope, Kitty, India, Megan and Violet. Charterhouse fielded well and the girls chased all the balls down and certainly didn't give up. Our team batted consistently with Hope retiring on 50 and Megan Webster with 36. Lucy and Violet also did well and India and Tallulah were in batting when we got the winning runs.

An excellent team performance and it finished an outstanding year of girl's cricket. All the girls should be pleased of what they have achieved and all the staff Martin Bicknell, Chris Sandbach, Ben King, Ben Mohammed and Jamal Sutton have played a massive role in their progress. The start of a very promising future for girls' cricket and we are now on the right pathway with more girls wanting to play and some excellent yearling cricketers who have just joined the school. The future is very bright!

Netball

Netball preseason for the seniors is going well with the focus being on general fitness, ball placement and agility around the court. They are starting to move well, be cohesive on the court and showed that against a good Kingston Grammar side. The 1st team won 30-21 and the 2nd team narrowly lost 31-32.

The Under School had a charity netball tournament organised by Ace and Mini (current Removes). The group stages ran over two evenings and the atmosphere down on the QSC courts was electric. It was certainly the battle of the houses and the Quarter finals, semi finals and finals are being played on Thursday 3 October. Fletcherites, Chetwynd, Lockites, Northbrook, Duckites, Saunderites, Verites and Hodgesonites have all made it through to the Quarter finals. Lots of fun was certainly had and most of all money donated for the girls’ Charities.

This week, we have the pleasure running netball trials for the U15 and U14 county tournament team.

Squash

Squash has enjoyed a successful start to the term, with our 1st V defeating Tonbridge and Wellington, and only narrowly losing to Radley.

Badminton

Badminton kicked off to a flying start with Josh as captain. In our first fixture of the season, we played Wellington, a school over which we have failed to triumph for at least 7 years. It appeared, however, that our time had come, and with some excellent and well-fought games, finally we chalked up a win right at the start of the season. Against Winchester a week later, the story was a little different, although Winchester is notoriously strong against most schools. We were not trounced, and the matches were tough, but given that almost all their players were in their final year of school, our squad with players ranging from Specs down to Removes, we did acquit ourselves well. With fixtures every week this Quarter, we look set to continue to improve, and a couple of new players have strengthened our squad even further, too. I am excited to see what the coming weeks will bring!

Swimming

In Swimming, there were some good performances against Surrey schools last week. House swimming will be coming up soon.

After this weekend, we will be starting team Carthusian team of the week where several members from each sport will be put forward and a whole team will be created out of all the years. Good luck everyone!
